Its Greek good looks and two big pools make this beachfront hotel worth shouting about.
From the outside, whitewashed walls and exposed stonework give this place an authentic Greek edge. Step inside though, and things take a more contemporary turn. In the bedrooms, that means sleek vanilla walls contrasted with flashes of bright blue and yellow. Marble bathrooms add a touch of luxury, while good-sized balconies complete the scene.

Outside, two huge swimming pools steal the limelight. There’s a multi-tiered pool, as well as a couple of smaller ones for the kids. When you’re not in the water, the lounger-lined terraces make great sunbathing spots.

Another good thing about this place is the choice of bars and eateries. The main restaurant serves international buffets in a partially open-air setting, and elsewhere there’s an à la carte restaurant. As for light bites and drinks, you’ll find a handful of snack bars by the small private beach and the pools. Night owls should head to the Mermaid Beach Bar – it’s open 10.00am-01.00am and has a large terrace to chill out on.

Last but not least, in terms of location the hotel is about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Agios Nikolaos.

Your guide to Aghios Nikolaos, Crete

"With a ‘bottomless’ lake and bags of charm to match, this is one of Crete’s most popular and cosmopolitan resorts."

Affectionately known as ‘Ag Nik’, this lively resort has come a long way since just 95 inhabitants were listed on its electoral role in the early 20th century. Now it’s one of the island’s most popular holiday hotspots, as well as being a busy working port. At the same time, it’s managed to retain its relaxed, small town atmosphere and is gorgeously picturesque, with oodles of Greek charm, to boot. Built around a so-called ‘bottomless’ lake which is linked to the sea by a narrow canal, the area around the lake is the most happening part of town, with vibrant cafes, restaurants and bars, bustling with chat and bouzouki music. You’ll find an amazing choice of places to eat here, offering everything from traditional Greek dishes to Chinese. And there are also quite a few sightseeing highlights in the town. Visit the Folk Museum with its fascinating exhibits including icons, embroidery and stamps. Pop into the town’s little namesake church, with its beautiful 9th century frescoes. And don’t miss the Archaeological Museum, which has many artefacts from eastern Crete, including a 7th century bust that bears a striking resemblance to the famous explorer Christopher Columbus. If you’re not much of a historian though, you’ll still find plenty to occupy you from the atmospheric Wednesday morning market to taking a gentle stroll along the bustling marina. And when you want to kick back and relax, pad down to one Ag Nik’s small, pebbly coves, or make the trip to nearby Istron, where the sand is cashmere-soft. Whatever you want to do, this sophisticated slice of Crete can’t fail to impress.
