Set on top of a hill this large and contemporary villa is ideal for families and large groups

It’s steeped in history, yet cutting-edge. And wonderfully peaceful, yet close to amenities. Granted they might sound like contradictions, but the Kourouni Villa pulls them both off. The villa itself is built in a contemporary Cretan style, so although the chunky stone exteriors look traditional, they’re whisked into the 21st century with arched windows and patio doors. Then there’s the pool. It’s a decent size and comes with fantastic views over the surrounding countryside and out to sea.

Inside, it’s just as vogue. All open-plan, the area feels particularly big thanks to the high ceilings, while the chic kitchen gives it a real Grand-Designs feel. And such is the thought that’s gone into the layout, that you’ll also be able to take in the view from the comfort of a modern three-seater sofa.

Location-wise, the winding road leading to the villa isn’t for the faint hearted. But such is its elevated position, that it was used by the Resistance to fend off German troops during World War II. It saw action, too – spent cartridges have been found embedded in the rock. Elsewhere, Chania is only a 20-minute drive away, while Omalos, the start of the spectacular Samaria Gorge, is easily reached by car. Closer to home, the nearest shops and restaurants are a five-minute drive away.

The first good news is the beach. A mile-long sweep of silky yellow sands with beach bars, tavernas and watersports at every few paces, it’s wicked for spending whole days topping up your tan and gliding over the waves. Choose your spot, admire the views and let the soft offshore breezes waft you into a gentle daylong daydream. And when the sun gets too hot, take a swim in the cooling, clear waters. Once you get bored of beach lounging, you don’t have to stray far to find other amusements. The bustling centre overflows with local and international eateries so you can switch between moussaka and burgers whenever your tastebuds tell you. Gift and beach shops are thick on the ground for souvenir-hunting sessions and at dusk, the pace quickens as an array of nightspots, bars and clubs conspire to keep you and your pillow apart. And if you fancy some even more intensive nightlife, just head for neighbouring Platanias, which rocks with happening party spots.
