Guide to Kalami

"Kalami is a small and friendly village-based resort that makes the most of its unspoilt surroundings. With the Gulf of Corfu on its doorstep and a backdrop of olive and cypress trees, it is in one of the most scenic bays in Corfu. Located 6km southwest of Kassiopi, Kalami is an idyllic escape with strong Greek influence, attracting couples and families wishing to kick back and soak up the sun. It is famous for being a temporary home to the writer Lawrence Durrell, who wrote 'Prospero's Cell' while staying in the White House here."

Kalami offers a lovely beach with even lovelier views. There are good general facilities on the beach, but the watersports are limited and this may not be the resort for you if activity is a high priority. However, all the essentials for a convenient holiday are available - there are shops selling necessities and souvenirs and restaurants with varied menus. Nightlife consists more of a good meal than a good dance, although it's close enough to other resorts to take advantage of their bars and discos.

Beaches

Kalami has a pretty sand-and-shingle beach lapped by deep blue waters and backed by lush green hills of olive, cypress, orange and lemon trees. Day-trippers often arrive by boat at the wooden jetty, and it can be busy in the summer. The waters are lovely and clear, making it perfect for snorkellers and swimmers, as well as those who enjoy lazing on a lilo. There are rocks beneath the water in some places.

Eating out

Mealtimes may be spent at one of the traditional tavernas beside a moonlit sea.

Nightlife

The resort has only a few bars. Nightlife often involves a glass of ouzo as an aperitif, and a good meal. Nearby Kassiopi has a little more variety.

Shopping

Kalami may not have the extensive shopping facilities of the larger resorts, but the basics are easily acquired.

Local information

Dine at the famous White House on the bay front at Kalami, where author Lawrence Durrell wrote 'Prospero's Cell'. Today, the distinctly English-looking building is a taverna with apartments above.
