Clasped between rocky cliffs, Ermones offers a real escape. Steeped in legend, this spot in western Corfu invites you to shrug the world off your shoulders and take things as slow as you possibly can.
The main activity – if you can call it that - takes place on the beach, a sand-and-pebble cove beneath a craggy hillside scattered with hotel bungalows. Once here, you’ll find the waters clear and cool, and some convenient giant, flat rocks ideal for catching the rays. While you’re reveling in the scenery, it’s worth pondering the legend that Odysseus, hero of Homer’s Odyssey, was washed ashore in the cove after being shipwrecked, only to be awoken by the princess Nausicca and a bevy of maidens.
A couple of charming tavernas await your custom along the beach, so you can stay happily here all day if you want. And up the hill in the village, a few traditional bars and small shops promise to keep you in food and drink during your stay.
While you’re here, set aside time in your less-than-hectic diary to delve into the surrounding tranquil countryside. Stroll to the village of Vatos through olive-clad hills. Seek out the beautiful beach at Mirtiotissa, backed by steep, rugged cliffs. Or if the familiar pleasures of a round of golf call, take to the pine-fringed fairways of the acclaimed Corfu Golf Club close by.
