Guide to Corfu Town

'Tangled streets, shuttered Venetian houses, a rich culture and a dash of British influence – Corfu Town seduces every which way.'

If a town can be all things to everyone, Corfu Town comes very, very close. Colourful and buzzing, this charismatic capital's one of the Greek islands' best, simply because it has so many different faces.
Enter the old town with its narrow streets of faded Venetian houses and you could be in Italy. Here, as well as countless jewellers and carpet shops, you'll find loads of stores plying Corfu's prized olive oil and sweet honey.
You'll also find a host of landmarks, from the impressive St. Spyridon church to the eucalyptus-shaded Esplanade, with its park and cricket ground. Linger here at the Liston, an arcaded terrace of cafes, and watch the world go by over a cooling ginger beer. Nearby, you'll discover two imposing fortresses and some fascinating places to potter around. Make time for the atmospheric Archeological museum with its Mycean and classical collections, and the icon-filled Byzantine museum.
For modern retail therapy, the new town's packed with upscale jewellers and designer good stores ranged along wide, elegant streets. It's great for an afternoon's moseying, especially with its pavement cafes providing welcome pitstops.
When you fancy time out, the capital's small, sandy Mon Repos beach is good for chilling for a while. For full-on beach days though, hop on a bus to any one of the lovely bays along the coastline.
Corfu Town takes night owls seriously, too. By sunset, its bars and restaurants swing into action serving pre-dinner ouzo and some of the freshest seafood you'll ever taste. Up for more? Then grab a cab to the north of town where you'll find more than enough music bars and nightclubs to keep you swaying 'til dawn.

Beaches

Mon Repos is the main town beach and is a small patch of sand with a cafe. Beyond the town, some of the best beaches of the whole archipelago, ranging from long sandy stretches to pretty shingle bays, wait to welcome you.

Eating out

Corfu Town is a great place to find excellent seafood and the best place to go is the Garitsa seafront, where there are plenty of fine restaurants. The Liston is a good place to go for lunch with a view of the Esplanade, although prices can be high.

Nightlife

With numerous bars and restaurants, there is a lot to keep tourists happy in Corfu Town. Most of the discos are situated in a small area a couple of kilometres north of the town and are frequented by locals and tourists alike. There are quieter options dotted about the town including the open-air cinema which shows mainly English-language films.

Shopping

Corfu has two distinct shopping areas; the commercial centre with all the banks and larger shops, and the old quarter with its maze-like streets that provide a much more interesting place to shop. Try not to get lost shopping for the local olive wood items and jewellery that can be found here. An old morning market selling fish and farm produce can be found near the New Fort.

Local information

For a spot of sightseeing, you don't need to step outside of the resort. The Old Town is the most interesting place to visit and huddles around a great central esplanade with public gardens and a cricket ground providing a pleasant escape for locals and tourists alike. The British influence is evident in grand municipal buildings, while the French made their mark with the Liston, an arcaded block overlooking the esplanade that provides the perfect venue for a sip of ginger beer beneath the arches. 18th-century Venetian architecture is evident in the winding streets of the old town where colourful shops draw the attention below and the week's washing hangs from balconies high above.
