If you’re looking for a quiet spot off the beaten track, look no further. The village of Agioi Deka is so small and hidden away from the usual tourist resorts that you’ll struggle to find it on maps and in guide books. Set in acres of trees on the side of Corfu’s second highest mountain it’s the ideal Greek island retreat.
At first glance this is just a traditional, sleepy village. And on second glance, it still is. Think elderly women dressed in black chatting in the streets, long-bearded orthodox priests walking to church and sun-baked old men tending their orchards. Life in this hillside spot has gone on undisturbed for years. But that’s not to say there’s nothing to keep you busy in Agioi Deka. It has incredible views across a sea of green forest to a blanket of blue seas. And with a 576-metre summit in the neighbourhood, it has some of the best walking on the island.
When you need something a bit livelier, you can always head down the hill to Benitses. Although it’s still only a village, it does have plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants. And it also has an impressive shell museum and Roman ruins to visit. As for sun worshippers, there’s more than enough golden beaches to take your pick from.
