Casa Turchina

Spectacularly sited Rogliano, Cap Corse's proudest village, enjoys splendid panoramic sea views from its hillside perch. The perfect vantage point from which to enjoy this stunning view is the marvellous roof terrace of Casa Turchina, a charming old house, which has just been beautifully restored. 'Turchina' means 'blue' in Corsican and describes both the colour of sea and sky which dominates the view from the terrace and from the top-floor kitchen through its wall of glass. The ground-floor sitting room has exposed stone walls, beautiful sea views and simple good taste in its furnishings and decor. On the floor below is a spacious twin bedroom with French windows opening to an outside stone staircase leading to a passageway which provides alternative access to Casa Turchina. As it is impassable to wheels, it is a good idea to pack quite light, as all bags have to be carried the last 100m or so uphill.

From its Roman roots to the bourgeoisie's handsome Tuscan-style mansions, Rogliano is full of historical echoes. Casa Turchina's roof terrace is perfect for sampling local products over candlelit or moonlit dinners, although extra care is needed to negotiate the house's steep stairs and occasional low ceilings after a bottle or two. Macinaggio, whose harbourfront boasts a choice of restaurants and cafes, is just 4km from Rogliano, and 2km further along a rough unsurfaced track is one of the Cap's finest sandy beaches: beautiful, unspoilt Tamarone.
