Long-established and long revered, the Grand Hotel de Cala Rossa attracts a band of discreet cognoscenti who return year after year to luxuriate in an ambience which marries sophistication with good taste. The elements are simple: a gorgeous, pearly white, pine-fringed beach and a decor which reflects the azure blue of the sea, the jade green of the forests, the ivory and coral of the beaches and the white of the surf. The service is polished but friendly and the elegance relaxed. And, rare amongst hotels of such distinction, children are welcome (baby-listening, babysitting and early suppers are available).
Wooden decks under the scented umbrella pines, which cast a dappled shade over the beautiful gardens, are the perfect place for languishing over a book or a drink. Naturally, the beach is well-groomed, the shallow, crystalline water is a tantalising aquamarine blue and the view across the Porto Vecchio Gulf to the peaks of Ospedale is magnificent. The hotel's 35-foot yacht is moored to the hotel's private jetty and can be rented (May to September), with skipper, for a truly unforgettable day cruise to Sardinia or Bonifacio. Other waterborne craft including Hobie cats, windsurfers, canoes and pedal boats are available for hire and the Cala Rossa also offers water-skiing. Tennis, squash, bicycles and keep-fit classes can all be enjoyed at no extra cost and the superb Sperone Golf Course near Bonifacio is just a 40 minute drive away, as are the spectacular mountains behind Porto Vecchio, where the hotel organises hikes, so you can return home not just tanned, but healthy. For extra self indulgence, the hotel also offers a fitness centre.
As with the decor, the Cala Rossa's hallmark when it comes to cuisine is a cultured mix of the simple and the sophisticated. Only the finest fresh ingredients are used: olive oil and basil from the fields, lamb and kid from the mountains and fish from the sea. The inspiration is Mediterranean, the hospitality Corsican and whether dining outside, with the moon and starlight filtering through the canopy of pines, or in the chic dining room, the gastronomic pleasures are matched by unfaltering service and splendid wines. The Cala Rossa has one of Corsica's best cellars, as well as a prize-winning sommelier and virtually all of the island's finest wines can be tasted here in perfect condition. Dinner at the Cala Rossa is an event that deserves to be treated with respect, so do remember to pack something other than beachwear, shorts or jeans although these are fine for enjoying freshly squeezed fruit juices from the beach bar, or cocktails or a glass of chilled champagne from the piano bar.
