From the 15th century onwards the ruling Genoese built around 110 towers on Corsica, to defend the strategic position the island held on the maritime crossroads between Europe, Africa and Asia. These fascinating structures are still a feature of the Corsican landscape today and visitors to the island will see them dotted along the coastline, but only a lucky few will be able to enjoy the experience of staying in one at La Tour de Micalona, which was featured in L'Express magazine's 20 best "domaine" accommodations in Europe. The nature of the tower means that this truly is a unique place to spend your holidays. Built in 1480, the present owner took up the challenge of converting it into a charming home two years ago, protecting the original shape of the tower, including the arrow-slit windows and rooftop crenellations. All the rooms are cosy and circular in shape with the original stone work built into the design of the rooms. The roof terrace has 360-degree views across the Valinco Gulf as far as Campo Moro and inland across the Taravo valley to the distant mountains of the Alta Rocca and has the clever addition of a refreshing shower to cool off from the glare of the sun. The tower has four levels: the ground and first floor have a ground level entrance and the second and third are reached by a wooden external stairway. There is a twin bedroom on the first floor and the shower room is located on the ground floor and is unique in its design as it is built around natural rock. The double bedroom is a real love nest, with a domed ceiling. The beaches of the Valinco Gulf are within one kilometre's drive of the tower and the seasonal shops and restaurants of Abbartello are five minutes away, with a more extensive selection of attractions and amenities twenty minutes' drive away in Propriano.

Private plunge pool. 9x4.5m
Approx. driving times: restaurants and shops (Abbartello) - 5 mins; sandy beach - 10 mins (walk via steps)
Please note that due to the nature of the tower the ceilings are very low, the rooms small and the stairways are narrow, so we would recommend it to couples or families with teenage children, but not young children or less mobile guests.
Some facilities may incur extra local charges
