Maison La Croix

The delight of the Balagne is that its picturesque villages are set against a backdrop of dramatic mountains and yet only a few kilometres above glorious white-sand beaches. In the heart of the Balagne is Lavatoggio, a traditional village which offers authenticity and seclusion only 15 minutes' drive from the nearest beach. Lavatoggio also boasts an excellent auberge and pizzeria-restaurant. Cateri, home to the famous 'Chez Leon' auberge where gargantuan feasts of hearty Corsican food can be enjoyed, is just a five-minute drive away.
In the lower part of Lavatoggio, known as the 'Hameau de la Croix', is Maison la Croix. Facing the meadows which encircle the village, this pretty house was built over a hundred years ago in the traditional, thick-walled barrel-vaulted Balagne style. Marguerite, the owner, has gone to great lengths to make the interior both charming and comfortable. Steepish steps from the footpath lead up to the terrace, which has a full sun awning. The front door opens into the living room, with an archway through to the large kitchen, which is provided with a big pine table and dresser. The double bedroom is cosy (too small for a wardrobe), and a small connecting bedroom leads into the shower room. The terrace of Maison La Croix overlooks the orchards and, to the side, the sea below.
