Le Pont Genois

An introduction to Le Pont Genois

In days of old, ripe olives were brought down on muleback along a centuries-old track, across a beautiful Genoese bridge spanning a stream to arrive at the Suzzoni's olive press. The current Suzzonis restored the mill and created a lovely garden, with the Genoese bridge and a beautifully designed swimming pool in pride of place. The gargantuan-girthed olive tree, thought to be more than 500 years old, in front of the mill, shades an outdoor eating area in the newly landscaped garden of cypresses, plums, figs, fragrant lavender and olives, where the sounds of the bubbling stream blend harmoniously with melodious birdsong.
The Suzzonis have brought out the full glory of the natural stonework, exposing the walls both inside and out, and integrating a kitchen-breakfast area into the former press. Stone paves the downstairs floor of the old mill, which forms an open plan living room and kitchen which leads to a new, but traditionally-styled extension comprising a bedroom and shower room. On the first floor are two attractive bedrooms, a bathroom and a wc.

Peeping over the tops of the trees is a glorious view of Lama, arguably the most beautiful village in Corsica, especially in the evening when the setting sun casts a glow over its historic walls. A ten minute drive brings you to this heart-stopping place, with its splendid panoramic views of sea and mountains and its several restaurants. A short track leads from Le Pont Genois to the road linking Ponte Leccia to the Balagne. A 15 kilometre drive brings you to the unspoilt beach of Ostriconi. Calvi and St Florent can easily be reached for a day trip in this direction, whilst in the other is the heart of the Corsican mountain range: Asco, the Castagniccia and Corte.
