Hotel Mare E Monti

This grand and serene mansion is set on the edge of a lovely village nestling against a pine grove beneath commanding peaks. The Renucci family have lived in the house ever since it was built in 1870 and converted it into a hotel three decades ago, retaining most of the original features, including the ceilings painted by an Italian artist and the stone staircase.
The Corsican tradition of extending hospitality to strangers is deep in the blood of the Renuccis and they receive guests not as customers but as family acquaintances. M. Renucci's son, an architect, is providing the artistic inspiration for the gradual process of renovation of the 18 rooms and suites. Modernisation would be the wrong word, because although smart bathroom fittings, hairdryers and telephones are involved, the decor remains beautifully simple and restrained, in harmony with the house's traditional flavour and rustic wooden furniture made by M. Renucci himself. Many of the rooms overlook the pine grove and the mountains, or the rear garden with its majestic cedars of Lebanon. There is a charming outdoor terrace at ground-floor level for enjoying breakfast in the summer months, while in the cooler ones of spring and autumn, a cosy log-fire is lit in the handsome breakfast room. Being right in the heart of the Balagne, Feliceto is ideally placed for exploring every corner of this marvellous region by car or on foot (some of the way-marked paths of the Balagne leave from the village itself). Gorgeous sandy beaches, and the resorts of Calvi and Ile Rousse are within a 30-minute drive, as are a number of typical village restaurants. Next door to the Mare e Monti is the Domaine Renucci, where the family's olive oil and award-winning wines can be purchased, whilst within the village there is also a restaurant, bar and shop.
