An introduction to Hotel Residence Castelbrando

Erbalunga is known as the island's artists' colony where little has impinged on village life, despite the increasing interest in this picturesque corner of the Cap Corse and the introduction of a handful of restaurants on the small square. Erbalunga still remains a charming, lively and authentic fishing village. The picturesque jumble of cottages which form the heart of the village have roofs of roughly fashioned 'lauzes' or slates, as does the Castel'Brando just across the road. Yet the similarity with fishermen's cottages ends there for this is a 'palazzu', a mansion built in the 19th century for the local elite and transformed over a decade ago with taste and sensitivity into a very special hotel. So special in fact that it is one of a handful in Corsica belonging to the 'Chateaux et Hotels de France' association, and in 2004 the hotel was awarded a silver medal by the French Tourism Ministry. The rooms are spread between four parts of the hotel: the main building, La Demeure, the annexe, La Villa-piscine (by the pool and somewhat quieter), La Villa Rose: six ground floor 'superieure' rooms on the far side of the pool, with bath, fridge and lovely patio, and L'Orangeraie, a brand new addition which has been designed for couples. The day starts with a buffet breakfast, in cooler months in the charming, stone-flagged breakfast room and outside in the summer. Bastia, with its atmospheric Vieux Port, is 10km to the south and just inland is a little explored area - wonderful walking country - of abandoned hamlets, 'petre scritte' and ruined castles.
