An introduction to La Roseliere
Planning controls are so strict in Corsica that houses really close to the sea are scarce, so a cottage just behind Pero Beach is a real find, especially one as private as La Roseliere. Just yards from the beach and with its own good-sized garden screened by vegetation, La Roseliere is perfect for a couple looking for the benefits of seclusion without the penalties of isolation. The cottage has its 'pieds dans l'eau', as the French say, not only because the beach is so close but also because a little stream meanders past, watering the tall bamboo and providing a habitat for the croaking frogs who try lustily to outdo the gentle beat of the waves on the sand. La Roseliere is set in a corner of the extensive grounds of the owner's house, yet is very private, having its own good-sized garden and a big stone-paved terrace, partly shaded. There is direct access to the beach from the grounds, over a little stream and the beach can also be reached via the main gateway.
As befits a seaside cottage, the interior is simple and comprises a spacious studio bedroom, with a double bed and a sofa bed, a kitchen and a shower room. The centre of Cargese is under two kilometres away and in high season you can simply stroll for a minute or two to enjoy a meal in one of the two or three cafe-restaurants which are so idyllically situated right on the beach.
The string of sandy beaches both north and south of this charming village, the splendid mountains lying just inland and the pinnacles of the Calanques - the most dramatic coastline in Europe - just a twenty minute drive away, should be what springs to mind when the name Cargese is mentioned. Yet Cargese's renown is also for its Greekness as it is still known as the 'Village Grec' from the Greek refugees who settled there two centuries ago.
