Hotel Labbaye

Covered in trailing bougainvillea, bright red roses and creeping ivy, the Hotel de l'Abbaye really is a little bit special. Once a Franciscan monastery, this dreamy stone property dates back to the 16th century and has been lovingly transformed into a hotel. And it's every inch Coriscan – bringing together the very best of the island's French and Italian influences. The exterior has a traditional French quality about it - almost reminiscent of a countryside cottage – while the interior oozes sleek Italian style with cream leather sofas, imposing marble busts and large porcelain vases peppering the lobby. Meanwhile, the restaurant, with its Louis XV wing chairs and stained glass windows, is a testament to the opulence of the Grand Siecle. At the heart of the dining room stands a regal-looking fireplace and great oil paintings and tapestries hang on the cameo-blue walls. Away from this Versailles-esque grandeur lies the more delicate breakfast room. Veiled in soft muslin and soothing rose-white drapes, it looks out onto a pine-shaded courtyard with views out to sea – the perfect spot for a cafe au lait and a buttery croissant first thing. The bedrooms are just as impressive, boasting flat screen TVs and the sumptuous soft furnishings simply exude inimitable French chic. As to the location of the property, it's just a few minutes stroll down to the beach. And the heart of Calvi, with its waterside restaurants and impressive citadel, is a couple of minutes' drive away.
