Notte Di Mele

An introduction to Notte Di Mele

Notte di Mele is the quintessential secret honeymoon lair where the 'sounds of silence' are all that can disturb - the trickle of springs, the breeze in the trees and the cry of hawks when all else slumbers in the heat of the day. Notte di Mele is the inspiration of Catherine Timotei who inherited a ruined fortified tower in Bonicardo and rebuilt it from the original tumble-down stones. It now comprises two huge rooms, sitting room with open plan kitchen and bedroom, both with impressive open fireplaces, and windows on every side casting light on the rich ochre walls, and a lovely bathroom. Upstairs you'll find the bedroom with an excellent double bed. Choice pieces from the interior design shop Catherine once ran, including some astonishing armchairs, mingle with family heirlooms, such as the huge antique mirror.
From an upper window you can pick cherries straight from the tree which shades the rustic outdoor dining table. One of Bonicardo's handful of inhabitants produces two local specialities: chestnut flour and charcuterie; other delicacies can be found in the little grocery store in Felce, two kilometres away, where fresh bread can be obtained to order. For a change there is a restaurant within easy driving distance.
The sea is only 45 minutes by car but there is also a natural swimming pool below the hamlet of Piobetta (3km). One of the Castagniccia's splendid walking trails, the 'Ronde des Fontaines' passes through Bonicardo where snippets of history intrigue: Moorish arches, traces of a 14th-century heretical sect and a painted chapel.
