If hotels were judged on their gardens, the Annabelle would win a few prizes. Occupying six landscaped acres they feature, towering palms, ornamental ponds and hidden patios, all linked by wooden bridges and secret flagstone trails.
Cocooned in the middle is the main pool, bordered by sunloungers and planted urns. The star pool is nestled among greenery a bit further on. Designed on two levels and framed by a waterfall, this lagoon has a fairytale quality. The beach, meanwhile, is a series of man-made decks. The views are impressive, too. The azure waters of the Med lie before you, while to one side Paphos’ old stone fortress stares back at you.
As for the hotel itself, it falls somewhere between big and boutique. Although fairly large, it’s family-owned and offers plenty of little personal touches. For instance, when you first check in, you’re handed glasses of chilled fresh orange juice. There’s also a good supply of luxury facilities. You can use the spa and gym at the neighbouring Almyra Hotel, reached through the gardens. Plus you can work your way through the five restaurants, including the Amorosa where you’re serenaded by a classical pianist. Another popular spot is the beachside Mediterraneo which hosts regular barbecue nights and Cypriot dancing shows.
One last thing – the hotel is in a convenient location for exploring Paphos. First of all, the shops and restaurants of Kato Paphos are more or less on your doorstep. And more than that, Paphos harbour, with its waterfront tavernas and fortress, is only a ten-minute walk away.
