Guide to Latchi

'Balmy hours on the beach, night times in traditional tavernas – Latchi is perfect for a quiet seaside holiday.'

Pack those shorts, snorkel and suncream and you're all kitted out for a holiday in Latchi. This traditional fishing village has the kind of easy-going groove that'll put a smile on the face of even the fussiest sun, sea and serenity-seeker. Life here is about bagging that spot on the beach – an expanse of pebbles and sand that seems to go on forever - and letting the hours slip through your hands as effortlessly as the waves trickle in and out from the shore. If you hanker after excitement, succumb to the lure of the jet-skis, banana boats and scuba diving at the nearby watersports centres – the warm turquoise waters here make the perfect playground. When you're ready for refreshment, take your pick of the excellent harbourside fish tavernas. Enjoy fresh kalamari, still spitting from the pan, with a crisp, feta-topped salad and a carafe of ice-cold retsina to help it down - who could want more? Later on, the low-key socialising that masquerades as nightlife here creeps into the twinkling tavernas and bars. Away from the village, head west to the Akamis National Park. A stunning area of untouched countryside which explodes into a mass of flower-filled meadows in spring and summer. Roam the nature trails snaking the peninsula to swim in secret rocky coves. And don't miss the Baths of Aphrodite, a supernaturally beautiful grotto where the Greek goddess of love is said to have swum.

Local information

The area is popular with divers - there is a scuba centre in Latchi and diving takes place along the Akamas peninsula. There are many walks available, and local sights include the Baths of Aphrodite - a spot reputedly selected by the goddess as a place to bathe herself, presumably because of the beauty of the surrounding countryside and cliffs. The scenery is at its most colourful during spring, thanks to the profusion of wild flowers and blossom on the trees. Public transport is limited, although there is a daily bus service to Paphos.
