Beautiful hotel, amazing food, great staff in an outstanding location.
This was our first abroad holiday so we were unsure what to expect and the weather forecast was HOT (not that the hotel can be held responsible for that!). The outstanding points; the food was amazing and plentiful. We were expecting mediocre buffet food and the children to moan but even the fussy husband ate three good size meals a day! It was generally hot and always being replenished, we never had to queue or haggle for a table. Welcomed by the Maître d' each night and shown to a table; the desserts were from another world and to die for! The plates were too swiftly taken away, on one occasion I had to fend off no fewer that four staff members from my husbands plate in less than 5 minutes while he escorted the youngest to the toilet. I understand they need to get the plates cleared but it wasn't nice still finishing your mouthful and having your plate taken away at each meal. Our housekeeper was delightful; after the first day and she realised her schedule of coming to our room in the afternoon would clash with the youngest having a sleep (and Wimbledon!) she started coming in the morning. She made an extra effort with everything, the boys teddies she tucked in so sweetly everyday and the apartment was always spotless, I would have happily have taken her home. She deserved an award, with no lifts the heat was 44degrees two of the days but she still smiled and made sure everything was finished to a high standard. The apartment was lovely, clean and airy. We landed in the middle of the night so didn't see our view until the morning; looking out onto Fig Tree bay was outstanding, I truly believe we had the nicest apartment in the hotel with the most beautiful view. The staff had left sandwiches for us but they were stale (which left me concerned for the rest of the weeks food but I was worried unnecessarily). The only other thing about the apartment was there wasn't a backed sofa in the apartment only two beds (one made up) which was a little irritating if we wanted to spend an hour out of the sun. I was happy to sit in the dining room chairs but my hubby like to lounge while watching the TV. The air con goes off when you remove your key, we did take our key off the fob and leave it in while we were out; it was too hot to not have the apartment cool on return. The kids club was a MASSIVE hit with the children; so I only sent the older two 9 and 6 to the 611 club as they could go together and the little one had a sleep. Once they'd been that is all they wanted to do! Once the little one (4) had met Bamse he wanted to join Bamse club even without his brothers. He too didn't want to spend any further time with us!! So whatever they were doing was obviously brilliant; the staff always made a massive fuss of them when they saw them around and I felt comfortable sending them. They only did 2 hours in the afternoon which suited us but they did morning and evening sessions as well if parents wanted. We enjoyed two hours together sat on our balcony with Wimbledon on and a cocktail in our hand! Perfect!! The evening entertainment was also aimed at the children and they loved it, especially the youngest. He really loved the clowns Charlie and Coco and they all enjoyed joining in with Download. Mummy not so much when she had a short skirt on, newly sunburnt legs and got chosen to race to put underpants on.... Anyway, luckily there is no video evidence! Sit in the back row, it isn't too far back not to see the children! The lovely staff won't drag you on stage from back there!! The entertainment staff were brilliant and a credit to the hotel, always giving 110%. How they danced, sang and smiled in those temperatures is phenomenal! The pool and beach were too over crowded to relax by; we tended to swim for a couple of hours each morning then return to the cool of the room before lunch. While the beach was beautiful to look at the sheer volume of people, sun loungers (which you pay for) and water sports it was far from the tranquil peace and quiet you are aiming for! On the third day we went for a walk while the children were at kids club and came across this little 'cove' just down from the activity pool, it is shingly/stony but we had taken beach shoes to prevent burnt feet so that did matter. There were a handful of people there, either sunbathing or in the water, so much quieter therefore nicer, we were happy to forego the sand for the lack of people. We spent much more time in the water, snorkelled a long way out seeing loads of different fish and with no tide and heavy salt water even the non-swimmers were perfectly safe in armbands and out of their depth (with an adult of course). It was perfect for us. The taverna was fantastic; all except one of the children tried the different menu opting for fishfingers; until the food came out and then he decided he did want it! The food again was outstanding and plentiful; convincing the children to try everything wasn't too difficult! Some of the not so great parts; a few staff let the side down. I know it was hot (I do think Thompson/TUI need to review their uniform policy) and it must be frustrating having people making the same mistakes everyday; I have done bar work, people can be annoying. However, we have all paid a lot of money to go away and it isn't difficult to smile, it isn't difficult to be polite and less difficult not to be rude. I always say please/thank you to staff; so be aware if you go to the 'wrong' bar for a drink you might get spoken to not so politely and try to order your drinks in one succession, not pause to check you have ordered everything you want; I did get strictly reprimanded for this. Water wasn't always cold, which was awful when the temperature was so hot; I am guessing they couldn't keep up with demand. Otherwise the drink selection was good and the alcohol was plentiful in the cocktails, more so in some than others, it depended on who poured it. I didn't drink masses as we had the children with us but occasionally I paused to order lemonade to add to the vodka that was sat alone in the bottom of my glass! Others have mentioned about there being no lifts, the stairs are external so it is hard work walking to the top floor in the heat but to be honest it wasn't that much of an issue. When we arrived they offered help with the bags, it would have been more difficult with a pushchair. I loved having the top balcony it meant I could sunbathe topless without frightening anyone! The plastic waste drove me insane, there was no need for it. They have decent reusable plastic glasses for alcoholic drinks but not for the children; why not have a different colour to decipher between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Ice-cream tubs why aren't they cardboard, the water bottles could be bigger especially for the rooms; they could even invest in proper machines for the rooms and just have bottles for downstairs. I am not a 'save the world' individual but the waste was abhorrent. The was no tea in the rooms, what was that all about??? The most important drink of the day and there wasn't any! They have a lovely Nespresso coffee machine but no tea, I wasn't very happy about that!! Only condensed milk, no normal milk so I had to 'steal' some from the restaurant in the morning. There was nowhere to get a snack in the evening, most normal people cannot eat after all that food but my husband who is not a large man has the ability to eat constantly. It was frustrating having to buy food for later when staying in an all inclusive but that is only because he can't stop himself!! Would we return? Probably not, it was everything we wanted in a holiday, amazing food, beautiful scenery, lovely room etc.. We didn't feel there was much to do in Protatrus; the trips to Fagamusta were very adult orientated with the exception of the one the day after we landed, which started at 8am and with the time difference the boys just hadn't enough time to adjust. Otherwise there wasn't anything else to do outside the hotel, which for a week wasn't a problem; obviously this isn't a reflection on the hotel as that was amazing and there was plenty to keep us there. Now we have the travel bug though and are looking for our next break and looking for at least 10days! We enjoyed the day on The Black Pearl from Ayia Napa, the boys thought that was brilliant; I will do a separate review for that. Finally, I read really quickly and spent 11euros on a £6 book, there is a little swap library in the reception area where I took my books at the end of my trip and swapped for a final one for the last day and the flight home. So have a look there and try and save a few pound!!More

NOT usual Thomson standard - Not 4 star - AVOID Unless you have really young children and want to be in a kindergarten
We visited this hotel with as family of 2 adults and a 16 year old for a week for 2 weeks 16th July. We had a 2 bedroom apartment with a partial sea view which we paid extra for when we booked and it was definitely a good investment. With daily maid service, it was very clean, the beds and pillows were comfortable and the bedding changed every other day. The bathroom towels were fluffy and smelled delightful. Having recently been refurbished, there was plenty of storage and hanging space and a really good sized balcony with sun loungers, table and chairs and umbrella. It was quite private as this was was 2 floors up and at the top of the hotel, however there is no lift, so not brilliant if you have young children, a buggy or less than perfect mobility. The apartment had a small kitchen area with cutlery, cups, kettle and full size fridge. Though no pans or frying pans so couldn't use the hob when we wanted proper bacon butties! There is a microwave as well. There is also a safe in the room. On a negative note, the bathroom is a very very small for the size of apartment. The bath wasn't really fit for purpose and the toilet too close to the door- not good if you are a larger size - The air-conditioning is a welcome necessity and is controlled separately in each of the room areas. There were however maintenance issues, our patio door fell out which could have been catastrophic , WIFI was appalling , The playstation in the room couldn't connect to the internet, TVs only had one useable channel which was BBC1 for English speakers , Our 16 year old son was given 18 certificate games by reception , The restaurant has both inside and outside areas and is quite small for the size of the hotel. It was less of a problem for us as we tend to be up early and we never experienced any difficulties. Sylvia and her team are very attentive and welcoming - tables are cleared very quickly - at times a little too quickly and almost before you have finished eating. There is plenty of food but at busier times there are queues. There is a really good selection of hot foods, salads and regional variations, although sometimes it is difficult to identify the theme without the board on the wall outside. There is a microwave in the restaurant but we never needed to heat the adult food, but useful for families with small children or for heating baby milk. There is air-conditioning in the restaurant - our tip would be eat early for all meals for the best experience. The menu runs on a week basis, so by week two we wandered into Protaras and had a few really good meals out. The pool snack bar cooks fresh snacks - these are hot and good quality. The hotel provides towels for the the pools. These are obtained from reception and can be changed every 3 days. They are a good size, long enough to cover the sun loungers and the ones we had were good quality. There are plenty of sun loungers but in some cases around the pools are very close together. The loungers on the grass and in the grounds are often nicer and quieter. The pools are very disappointing and were the let down of the holiday . There are 2 pools and a baby pool. The hotel has a "no inflatables" policy, but this is not enforced, the pools get very very crowded and are not pleasant to use. However, if you eat early, the pools are less crowded before 10am, so go early to avoid the rush. We spent lots of time on the balcony as the pool areas were uncomfortably busy. We didn't experience the entertainment as we went into Protaras most evenings - the client group is mainly Scandinavian so any entertainment is repeated in a number of languages. English guests should know that the client group is mainly Scandinavian and therefore the reps are too The hotel is based on a peninsula at one end of Protaras. Fig Tree Bay is picturesque but also very busy during the day. Protaras is around 5-10 minutes walk and the main street has a reasonable selection of restaurants, shops, bars and supermarkets. A taxi to the far end of the strip is round 7 euros and a wander back can take anywhere from an hour depending how many times you stop for drink! The hotel receptionists are very good and will order a taxi for you to come and collect you at the hotel. We were very very disappointed with the rep team. They couldn't really be bothered .It was far from the standard we have come to expect from Thompson / TUI - Our main contact was Tino - All of the reps were very young and immature and need to realise that "family holiday" means different things to different people. Renditions of "heads, shoulder, knees and toes" around the pool followed by then throwing reps into the pool whilst ignoring the no inflatable rule constantly isn't really what we would want from what was advertised as a 4* hotel. At the welcome meeting, the rep had very little control, couldn't really be heard and although was very happy and smiley to take our £300 he failed to deliver some of the commitments and special requests we had for trips despite being really clear that these were for health needs. As such, some trips which had paid a lot of money for through TUI, failed to live up to expectations. Very disappointing and such a let down NOT a 4 star hotel and not worth the value for money, nor was it as described in the brochure- suggest TUI management team do some unannounced visits and inspections and see what really is happening Ask for a second key as your main one needs leaving in for air conditioning to workMore
Good and bad points
I visited this hotel with my partner and 9 year old daughter for a week from 16th July.we all very much enjoyed our holiday but some aspects could have been better. Room We had a 2 bedroom apartment with a sea view which we paid extra for and couldn't fault.spotlessly clean comfy beds and pillows, powerful shower, fluffy towels, loads of storage space and a huge balcony with sunloungers parasol and table and chairs which was totally private.only thing missing was a drying rack on the balcony and the apartment had no full length mirror. Food Food was very good but unfortunately cold 90% of the time.there's a microwave in the restaurant but that defeats the object in my opinion.plates are cold and the food is left under heaters with metal cloches on them.many ignorant guests left these open which didn't help.only had lunch in the restaurant once and this was very disappointing.stone cold food, undercooked vegetables and tough meat.the restaurant is far too small for the hotel and gets extremely busy.tables ars very close together and you spend your meal having people banging into your chair.also the queues were horrendous sometimes.many kids running about also.best time to have breakfast was before 8.30 as was quiet and leave dinner till 8.30.they have themed nights everyday but on two occasions this was world classics and wasn't great so we ate out twice and enjoyed our only hot dinner of the holiday.the snack bar by the larger pool was great.good choice available and all hot items were cooked to order and HOT!!! So hot in fact you had to wait a few minutes before eating.food consisted of burgers, pizzas, chips, chicken nuggets, toasters, rolls salads and wraps.everything I ate here was delicious. Drinks Never tried the hot drinks as bring my own tea and coffee, soft drinks and juices were nice.beer gassy and watered down, wine drinkable.many cocktails available but apart from the pina coladas were too strong so not very nice. Pools Two pools plus a baby pool with a sunshade over it.this was closed on few occasions probably due to babies not wearing swim nappies so having accidents.I blame the parents for that.the pools are far too small for the amount of guests.it's impossible to have a decent swim in them as they are too crowded.also kids throwing balls in them don't help and my daughter was hit in the face twice.plus by midday the water is warm and not refreshing.sunbeds are very close together and you need to be sitting on one by nine or they remove your towels.I saw guests sleeping on them at six am in order to have the spot they wanted.I found both pools to have too many chemicals in them and they made my eyes sting like hell and my skin felt very dry and tight.there are showers round the pool and lots of guests used them to rinse off.pool toilets at main pool were spotless but the smaller pool they stank of sewage and the ladies were swimming in water. Entertainment This is a family hotel so everything was geared up for the kids.a few games for both the adults and kids went on everyday some of these pool based.my daughter enjoyed these very much.sadly we couldn't get her to go to the kids club as she's extremely shy,but from what I saw of it they looked amazing and the kids were having the time of their lives.the evening entertainment comprised download which was aimed at the kids where they did party dances and played a few games and were split into red and blue teams.at 9pm the main show would start usually performed by the animation team.we saw 2 shows one was a Disney show and the other was songs from musicals which was very good.there is zero adult entertainment in the evening.the show ends at 10pm and that's it for the night.there is a bar open at the main pool till midnight on the dot when they turn the lights out.very few chairs here so sometimes couldn't get a seat.no atmosphere whatsoever.no background music or anything.just people chatting and playing cards.the hotel is predominantly fir Swedish and Norwegian guests and the Brita are hugely outnumbered here.only 20%British and the Swedes tend to go to bed after the show so we only saw Brits at the bar after 10.who wants to go to bed at 10 when your on holiday?we went out on four occasions and saw many of the hotels British guests out and about also. Animation team These guys headed by Ryan do a fantastic job and are an asset to the hotel.every single one of them gave 110% to their job and were so welcoming and friendly.they put together great shows fir the kids with fantastic costumes and were very good singers also.Cannot fault this hardworking team at all. Location Great location at the end of fig tree bay.beach is a stone's throw away and we just walked there to swim in the lively clear sea then walked back to hotel to dry off around the pool.you can also enter the sea via steps directly outside the hotel.the water is deep here though and you cannot touch the bottom and is a bit rocky.I would recommend wearing wet shoes.supermarket just down the road from the front if the hotel, but quite expensive.shops bars mini golf and a small kids funfair (best for under 8s) a 5 to 10 walk away.protease is quite small and compact so easy to get around. All in all a great holiday.would have given the hotel 4 stars but because of cold food and early finishing entertainment ,gave it three.I wouldn't recommend coming here without kids or if you just have over 10s.More

Fantastic family holiday
I really do not have enough words to describe how wonderful this hotel is... food is superb, Staff very friendly although rushed off their feet . Everywhere is constantly cleaned. Rooms are beautiful with very comfy beds, pillows also spacious. I had a 1 bed room overlooking sea and pool which was fantastic..128 if anyone wants to know where to request!!! Greeted by warm welcoming reception late into night with champagne, water or other soft drink available. Main strip just minutes away and plenty to do on the beach. Reps where great as well. Definitely worth every penny and will be coming back next year... im usually very fussy and always find something to moan about but can't find a fault with this place...More
