Hotel Sunrise Beach

The Sunrise Beach Hotel’s best bits include an on-the-beach setting and a handy sunbed allocation system.

Thanks to its beachfront position, you can flip-flop between the hotel’s pool and the sea in a few steps. Protaras’ main strip isn’t much further away, where you’ll find a clutch of authentic tavernas.

One of the hotel’s big draws is its dine-around programme. It means you can have dinner in a choice of restaurants in the area, which serve the likes of American, Asian, Italian and Greek cuisine.

Not quite so excellent

We have just returned from the Sunrise Beach which was our 5th visit. Our flight with Thomson was delayed and therefore we did not get to the hotel until 1.00 pm. We arrived to be checked in by a very grumpy receptionist which was very unusual as the reception people are usually excellent and so friendly. I can confirm though that this is the only grumpy one we had and the rest of the other staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. We had room 417 which is a side sea view and we found the noise from the road exceptionally loud this year which meant we did not sleep until at least 2.00 pm every night. The room was fine but they are looking very tired. They certainly are not the standard we had a few years back. The bedding looks old, worn and grubby, the towels needs renewing and the bathrooms need refurbishing as our bath was black in the bottom. Air conditioning in the rooms is now almost non existent and obviously wants replacing or looking at. All in all though the room was kept clean but not as well kept as in previous years. We noticed that the sunbeds are getting really old and could do with an update. The beach towels are almost thread bare and again need replacing. The pool is clean but there are rusty jets in the jacuzzi bed area. There is a big problem arising in the pool with plasic cups floating around and also there are loads of massive inflatables being taken in the pool (despite a notice up saying they are not allowed in the pool). Children are diving in the pool on top of you which is annoying when you just want a swim. Neo and his team make this hotel, they are so professional and deliver a 5 star service to the restaurant. Breakfast is great and everything you need. Evening dinner is in a lovely setting with the first class friendly staff. The food is good but not as good as it has been in previous years. The entertainment team we felt was poor. This hotel is obviously missing the lovely Angelo who made it his job to make everyone welcome and went round every guest to introduce himself and invite you to join in and this is certainly lacking from the present team. Yiannis and his team at the beach bar are still also professional, efficient and very friendly. They always remember you and have a chat. Protaras itself, well what can I say except it is ruined. Such a shame as it is now full of loud bars, nightclubs, supermarkets that sell tacky gifts and a MacDonalds. What happened to the quaint little town of Protaras? It is now a mini Ayia Napa/Benidorm and this is not helping the hotel at all because of the noise. The beach and the lovely warm sea are the best I have seen especially if you have children. Despite the above we had a lovely holiday and the comments above are only are opinion of the changes we have seen over the last five years. We originally found a little gem which has now been spoilt. If you are looking for a chill out on the beach/pool holiday in the day and loud lively nights then this is the place for you and I can recommend the Sunrise Beach (I do understand it is due for a refurb in the near future) but if you want a quieter holiday you may want to look elsewhere. Thank you to the Sunrise for a nice holiday. This is still a good hotel but our rating has gone from excellent to good.More

Wonderful hotel in great location

I have recently arrived home from a very relaxing weeks holiday at the Sunrise Beach. I was very impressed with the hotel, had a side sea view room and was a little worried as I'd read other reviews saying they were noisy - well you could faintly hear music from the Main Street just up the road, but this was not by any means disruptive and always turned off by 12.30 at latest - certainly nothing to complain about! The dine around option was fantastic and makes you feel like you're going out for dinner in the evening rather than being bound to the hotel. All meals were excellent. We were on half board and you could trade your evening meal for lunch if you preferred - we did this once or twice, it is full table service and delicious. Service was always first class, very attentive and keen to please staff. Entertainment not great but didn't worry us. Allocated sun beds on arrival which works really well and I can only wonder why other hotels don't do this. Bringing round icecold flannels midday to cool everyone down is a nice touch. Will definitely be backMore

Great Location

The Hotel is right in the middle of all the bars pubs and restaurants and on the beach. Perfect for young teens (the location not so much the hotel). It has 2 restaurants at the entrance but they are Italian and Aisan. We arrived at 1.30 am and the night staff weren't very friendly, there was no offer of help with our cases or directions to our room. (our side of hotel room had a lift next to it which could be reached from the tour operators end of the reception area, we weren't told bout this and used the main lifts). The day staff were much nicer, except one porter who was ignorant. Justine behind the lobby bar was helpful as was Maria on reception. Breakfast is huge with lots of choice. You get allocated a sunlounger by the pool staff who also give out towels every morning. Be pleasant to them, they are very overworked but will change where your lounger is located if they can. There is a sandy level between pool and beach which gets any breeze, the beach loungers have to be paid for. The pool with the pool bar became very murky after our 3rd day there, the larger pool was clear. The pool bar staff are also overworked and struggle to cope between 12 and 3. There is a cold water pool inside if the heat gets too much. The beach is clean and the sea crystal clear, it gets deep quickly so no shallows for little ones to play in. We encountered quite a lot of unfriendliness from other guests of all nationalities and the Essex and Midlands guests were very loud by the pool, allowing their children to splash other guests and do as they pleased. Our "side pool view" room overlooked the delivery area of the hotel and an abandoned building area, they will change rooms if they can but the nicest rooms will be charged for. If you want tips or info, ask the bar staff!More

Fantastic holiday

Last time we visited the Sunrise Beach was back in 1998 with our baby daughter, so we were looking forward to returning 17 years later, to see whether it does live up to all the positive comments. We were not disappointed - we had a fabulous 2 weeks. I had previously requested 2 adjoining rooms for us and the children and was pleased to have been allocated them (2nd floor) however they were on the side with no sea view (overlooking a Bar and Indian). I was originally disappointed with but to be honest we hardly spent any time in our room so in the end it didn’t matter and we didn’t notice any late night noise. The rooms were clean and comfortable although a bit dated. We were surprised to find the plug points were all 3 pin in the room. Wi-fi was a bit hit and miss (more miss!) so I think this can be improved. We found all the staff very helpful and polite – especially Reception when I tried to arrange a (nut free) birthday cake for my son’s birthday. They phoned the chef and he came and spoke to me personally to arrange. The allocated sunbeds are such a brilliant idea. You need to see the sun bed man as soon as you arrive so he can allocate. We started in the garden as that was all he had but 2 days later we managed to get moved. My husband and I had two on the beach front whereas my daughter & son had theirs by the pool. The beach is very clean and the sea was just amazing – so clear and a beautiful colour, definitely one of the nicest beaches I have been to. The ice cold towels and fruit in the afternoon is a nice touch. Special mention to Yiannis and Adamos at the Beach Bar who looked after us. We loved their cocktails and the food was ideal for us at lunchtime. My son took part in the daytime sports activities (darts/killer pool & table tennis) and made lots of friends. There was a wide selection of water sports available on the beach – we tried parasailing and my son had his first water skiing lesson. We had B&B but took up the special Half Board offer when we were there. All their restaurants were good although we did find it difficult to book convenient times – only really early times seemed to be available on the booking system, but again Reception and the Catering Manager was very helpful and we managed to get an alternative time. We especially liked the Italian Marcello’s and the Pan Asian Lemongrass restaurants. The Terrace restaurant and Bar have stunning views of the sea and beach and it’s a lovely place to unwind with a drink early evening. Would also recommend visiting Vangelis restaurant (past the Lemongrass) it’s the oldest Taverna in Protaras and there is a Greek Taverna up the stairs next to the Guru bar. Beware all the portions are huge!! The meze was really good value for money and a litre of wine for 10 Euro’s – always busy and people queuing to get in. The Reef Bar in the hotel was popular with my son and husband as they showed the cricket and football and again the bar staff were really friendly. You can see why people return year after year and I would definitely recommend this hotel and really hope one day to return.More

Great location great service

We spent 1 week in the hotel, the stuff is very nice and the service is great. The big plus is the location and that the pool is 10-15 meters from the sea. Protaras is a great place and sunrise beach hotel its a good decision.More
