Guide to Trsteno

'The quiet village of Trsteno is home to one of Croatia's most beautiful sights, a delightful 16th century house and arboretum.'

Trsteno is located just under 30km to the north west of Dubrovnik. It can be easily reached by the Dubrovnik to Split bus route, which drops visitors right in the centre of the village. This is a simple and traditional place where you can really get an idea of what local life is like. In common with most of Croatia's towns along the sea it has some delightful coastal views and eateries. One thing that Trsteno can boast above rival resorts though is its most famous attraction, a stunning historic summerhouse. Back in the early 16th century a local nobleman, by the name of Ivan Gucetic, had a villa built for him to enjoy during the summer. The house is set within beautiful gardens bursting with colourful blooms, including lavender, bougainvillea and oleander to name but a few. There's also a thriving orchard and great sea views, which all go together to make a very special place. This really is a must for all visitors to the area, and for many its serves as a good reason to visit Trsteno in its own right. Today the entire house and gardens belong to the Croatian Academy of Sciences, and have collectively become known as the Trsteno Arboretum. Having explored its many delights you can then venture beyond the grounds into the nearby woods, to see for yourself the spectacular beauty of this little part of Croatia.
