Imagine waking up in the morning and flinging open the French windows leading from your bedroom on to a terrace and the view that greets you is a wide-ranging coastal panorama, with distant island and mainland outlines glistening in the early morning sunlight. This dreamlike beginning to the day is no figment of the imagination, but rather the reality of staying at the Villa Jelavic.
A few steps lead down from the narrow coastal road to the entrance to the villa which leads into the open-plan living area. This room opens out on to the fabulous terrace, all 15m of it which runs the length of the villa. The double bedroom and one of the twin bedrooms also have direct access to the terrace, while the third twin has a window overlooking the sea. The bedrooms have been recently refurbished to a comfortable standard, as have the two shower rooms which complete the villa.
The Canadian-Croat owner, Zonko Jelovic, spends a few months a year living in the apartment on the level below Villa Jelavic. Guests are welcome to use the barbecue on his terrace. Approximately 20 steps lead down to the sunbathing terrace area above the rocks, from which the sea will doubtless invite for a refreshing dip time after time.
Trpanj lies a 10 minute stroll away from the villa, close enough to leave the hire car at home and enjoy a bottle or two of the peninsula's own wine over a meal on the terrace of one of the quayside restaurants. Xenophiles will also appreciate the proximity of Trpanj to the villages at the heart of the peninsula which produce the highly drinkable red Dingaa wine. The best beaches are also to be found on this side of the island, and there is a small and secluded pebbly beach at the end of the road passing the villa. A ferry connects Trpanj with Ploae on the mainland proper, which itself has little to offer the non-enthusiast of centralised town planning, but is a convenient landing stage for trips to Medugorje and Mostar in Bosnia-Hercegovina.
