Inland Istria is so relatively unspoiled that it is becoming 'the new Tuscany' i.e. a place where those who can afford it would love to own a second home. It's easy to understand why when you hear the cockerel crow, watch the sun set over the rich red soil of the vineyards, or cycle past the rolling hills, orchards, farms and pretty villages. Ruzici (near Pazin) may be out in the sticks but there's enough to do and see. You are only nine kilometres from Labin, a fascinating and unexpectedly pretty former mining town with a museum, several churches and craft shops, a medieval castle and a limestone gorge. And if you're missing the sea, Rabac on the coast is only about 20 minutes' drive.
