Guide to Plat

'Simple, small and seriously quiet, tiny Plat is heaven in the form of peaceful pebble beaches and translucent seas.'

Wedged between steep mountains and ravishing turquoise seas between Cavtat and Dubrovnik, there's only one reason for people to come to this tiny place. And that's to sunbathe, swim and unwind in almost total seclusion. If that sounds too good to be true, come on in and see it for yourself. Graced by pretty, pine-shadowed pebble bays gripped between cypress-tipped headlands, the resort couldn't be quieter. With just a couple of sleepy restaurants along the main beach, the only signs of activity are the holiday village perched on an overlooking promontory and the phut-phut of excursion boats to Dubrovnik. At the beach – one of which is naturist - it's a case of sunbathing the days away. Here, smooth pebbles tumble gently into cool, clear waters, creating perfect venues for snorkelling and basking in the rays. Bring your sun cream and disappear into your daydreams. When you start getting fidgety, catch one of the boats that moor at Plat's little jetty and sail for Dubrovnik. Just a 30-minute ride over the waves, its exquisite old town isn't called the Pearl of the Adriatic for nothing. Enclosed by thick, honey-stoned walls, its marble-stoned streets, Baroque churches and glorious palaces make it a living, breathing museum. Walk the walls, sip an iced coffee in one of the countless pavement cafes and explore the shaded passageways and graceful, buzzing squares. Alternatively, take the boat to palm-lined Cavtat, sampling its pine-cooled beaches and classy waterfront restaurants. Come nightfall, relax into the slumbering calm of Plat, feasting on fresh, salt-baked fish or succulent roast lamb as the stars twinkle above.

Beaches

There are several shingle beaches in Plat with gentle slopes and calm waters making it a good choice for families. Also popular with couples and those who like sunbathing with a view, the beaches are secluded and quiet, many with man-made bathing platforms. When you've topped up your tan, cool off in the shade of a tall pine tree or go for a snorkel with the colourful creatures of the Adriatic Sea. One of the beaches in the resort is naturist.

Eating out

At mealtimes, the holiday village has a traditional-style taverna and several cafes serving both Croatian and international cuisine. The menus are extensive, the food is delicious and the staff are friendly. For an even wider choice, head to bustling Dubrovnik, or for an authentic dining experience, venture inland. Wherever you go, you'll find fresh fish, pork and veal featuring heavily in the cooking. Try 'brodet' - a hot, peppery fish stew that will wake up your tastebuds.

Nightlife

As darkness descends on Plat, life in this tiny village becomes even sleepier. There is a small nightclub in the holiday village, but that's about the extent of the high life. Most guests spend their evenings relaxing with a romantic, sunset walk or a chilled glass of crisp Croatian wine.

Shopping

The holiday village has a small shopping mall with a well-equipped minimarket. For more choice, head to Dubrovnik where you'll find elegant boutiques, street stalls and souvenir shops. Take home some handmade jewellery for a good quality, unique reminder of your time in Croatia.

Local information

For some daytime sightseeing, visit nearby Mlini, a picturesque village protected by high mountains. The name of the village is derived from the Croatian word for mill - one was set up here to take advantage of the local springs and gushing stream, which, together with a charming brick bridge, provide a focal point in this dreamy seaside resort.
