Guide to Lovran

'Sun-drenched beaches, a faded medieval quarter and romantic suppers around a moonlit harbour – Lovran captures the old-time charms of the Opatijan Riviera like nowhere else.'

Clustered round a medieval town and fishing harbour, Lovran flexs its modern tourist muscles along the coast either side. Here, you'll find the Lungomare - the paved waterfront - connecting it to Opatija. No visit is complete with strutting along this walkway enjoying the scent of camellia-studded gardens and the panoramas over the pine-cloaked coastal hills. And this is where to come for Lovran's two public beaches. Stretches of rocks blessed with ultramarine waters, they're ready-made for tanning and taking cooling dips when the sun gets too hot. Ready to explore? Amble around Lovran's old quarter. A spider's web of narrow streets, faded Italianate mansions and flower-filled gardens, it's perfect for sunlit strolling. Check out its watchtower before admiring the 14th century church and stunning frescoed chapel. And seek out the old town hall, its frontage depicting St. George spearing a dragon. Fast forward to dinner and Lovran's harbour beckons. A delightful creek encircled by seafood restaurants, this is the place for candlelit suppers of delicate fish carpaccio and the region's succulent chestnut cake. For after-dark entertainment, head for Opatija with its smart casinos and glittering cafe-lined waterfront. And for simpler pleasures, take the challenging climb up Mount Ucka, walking through fragrant pinewoods roamed by deer and squirrel to wallow in the dizzying coastal views from its summit.

Beaches

There are two public beaches in Lovran itself and the beautiful coastline can be best appreciated by walking along the Lungomare promenade. Meandering along the coast, it passes summer residences, stretches of rocky beach and benches set down in small leafy gardens.

Eating out

Renowned for its seafood restaurants, Lovran is a wonderful place to enjoy succulent scampi, freshly plucked from the Adriatic. Visit one of the charming patisseries and taste swirls of ice cream good enough to grace even the most discerning Italian 'gelateria' or try the famous chestnut cake.

Nightlife

Lovran is too small and quiet to have a 'nightlife' but its neighbour, Opatija, boasts cosmopolitan bars and lively discos so if you are longing for a taste of Croatia's high life, you won't have far to go. Alternatively, if the idea of an evening spent in a waterfront taverna listening to the slow tide lapping the shore sounds like your idea of heaven, you'll love Lovran.

Shopping

Lovran boasts a sprinkling of shops selling a variety of treats, from souvenirs to clothes. Chestnut cake is the local speciality - made from the fruit of surrounding chestnut trees - its a delicious reminder of your holiday.
