'Tiny, tranquil and totally sub-tropical, this little island is luxuriantly green and infectiously calm.'
Lopud is a lovely choice for those in the know in Croatia. Lying just 7km across the water from Dubrovnik, its sunny landscape is serenely rural. Think citrus groves, cypress trees and pines cloaking its slopes to the sea. In the fishing village after which the island is named, botanical gardens are a bright profusion of blooms and blossoms. Here too is a broad promenade for sunset strolls, a handful of bars and restaurants, and a gently shelving sandy beach – a rarity in the region. And there's one thing conspicuous by its absence - traffic. The car-free streets are enjoyable for everyone and a special boon for young families. A second beautiful beach lines the bay of Sunj. Facing out toward Italy, it's a real favourite with sun-worshippers. And the whole island oozes an atmosphere of real relaxation. When you're ready to broaden your horizons, there are island-hopping boat trips, rampart walks around Dubrovnik, and supremely scenic drives along the mainland coast to Split. Stir yourself … it's worth it.
