An introduction to Karmens House

An original Venetian townhouse 'lost' in the old heart of Dubrovnik, this delightful and cosy building near the Music School has led something of a charmed life. It predates the 1667 earthquake, built as it is on solid stone and it also luckily escaped damage during the siege.
Here in the medieval Old Town, houses competed for space with palaces, churches and monasteries and so they extend vertically rather than horizontally. Entering from the narrow stone-flagged street, where locals sit out on the steps to exchange news under washing swaying in the breeze, the ground floor is taken up by a cosy living and dining area, a galley kitchen and a small shower room. Steepish stairways lead up to the two bedrooms, each occupying its own floor.

The house has been in the possession of owner Karmen's family for well over 100 years and remains as homely as if they were still in permanent residence, filled as it is with interesting artefacts.

Approx. walking times: restaurants, cafes and market - 5 minutes

As the Old Town is a car-free zone, Karmen or a member of her family and a porter will meet you at the town walls and lead you through the warren of streets and steps to her house. Don't worry if you don't memorise the way back, as the fun of staying in this part of town is in losing yourself and making your own fortuitous discoveries.
