“With its views over Dubrovnik and seafront pool, this graceful hotel lives up to its palatial-sounding name.”
There can’t be many settings to compete with this. For want of a better word, it’s magnificent. Gazing across the Adriatic, the Grand Villa enjoys picture-postcard views over old and the island of Lokrum. More than that, it’s a mere ten-minute stroll from one of Dubrovnik’s Medieval gateways.

As you’d expect, the hotel takes full advantage of the panoramas. Along the tiered gardens and terraces, carefully placed benches and patios let you drink in the views. The swimming pool, meanwhile, is set into a terrace inches above the sea. Likewise the restaurant. Set under the shade of umbrella pines, it’s a photogenic spot for light lunches. And rounding off the relaxation repertoire is an indoor pool and luxury spa.

The hotel’s interiors cut a dash as well. The lobby is graced with religious statues, exposed stone pillars and regal armchairs that lend it the air of a ducal palace. And Medieval wall maps and polished wood dominate in the lobby lounge.

The Victoria restaurant warrants a special mention, too. With a balustraded terrace, it’s a seriously stylish spot. Reserve a table and you’ve got yourself arguably the best seat in town for a sunset meal. Not to mention fresh seafood and Mediterranean cuisine.

On the accommodation front, the rooms are shared between the main building and neighbouring villas built in Croatia’s trademark honey-hued stone. And for a small supplement, you can book yourself a sea-view room opening out to grandstand vistas.

Your guide to Dubrovnik, Croatia

"Nowhere else in the world is a medieval city is so perfectly presented. But Dubrovnik isn’t preserved in aspic. It’s vibrant and vital, with pizzerias in its pretty squares, discos down its cobbled streets and watersports on the deep blue sea. Inimitable …"

Encircled by the sturdiest city walls, Dubrovnik climbs up cobbled streets, twists along narrow alleyways and opens onto hidden squares. It’s a labyrinth with a sightseeing treat round every corner. The view from the ramparts over terracotta-topped buildings is almost too perfect to be real. Church domes and bell towers rise towards the sky. And here and there are splashes of green – where a tall tree is throwing dappled shade onto an ancient piazza. But it’s not all about the city scene. Lapping at the city’s south-western edge, the Adriatic forms a sparkling blue backdrop to a picture unchanged through centuries. So much for the wider picture. Now home-in on the detail. This UNESCO World Heritage Site may look much as it did six hundred years ago, but it survives because it’s anything but old-fashioned. Along with the monasteries and palaces, there are markets and pizzerias. Intimate bars and restaurants inhabit old-world buildings. In July and August, Dubrovnik’s Summer Festival fills the stone-paved streets with the music of outdoor concerts. The town’s marina is attracting a growing number of yachties – and sailing is second-to-none with so many offshore islands to explore. This city is a one-off.
