The magnificent view from the balcony aside, apartment A provides truly spacious holiday accommodation with a roomy living area, a shower room as well as a bathroom and twin and double bedrooms. The bedrooms share a small side terrace with views towards the island of Lokrum, upon which Richard the Lionheart was reputedly shipwrecked. He was so grateful for the island's shelter that he donated funds towards the building of Dubrovnik's cathedral.
A short flight of steps leads down to apartments B and C and their sea-facing terraces from where glimpses of the sea and the Old Town can be had through the trees and vines of the owner's garden next door. Apartment B is similar in layout to A above. In apartment C, both the living room and double bedroom have French windows opening on to the small private terrace, whilst the bathroom can be entered from either of these rooms. All apartments benefit from air-conditioning and a washing machine and have been furnished to a comfortable modern standard.
These apartments are owned by a civil engineer who was instrumental in the preservation of Dubrovnik's old stone buildings during the 1980s. Bozo lives in the house next door with a couple of generations of his family and they go about their daily business, including tending to their garden of roses, geraniums, vines, vegetables and lemon and olive trees, whilst maintaining a respectful distance from their guests.
The photographers' favourite view of Dubrovnik, which features on countless picture postcards, shows the sheer stone wall of St John's Fortress shepherding boats into the Old Harbour with the Baroque dome of the cathedral rising above a jumble of pantiled roofs - all against a backcloth of the gently moving, blue waters of the Adriatic. To state that the ideal vantage point from which to take this shot is the terrace of the upper-floor apartment A at Sipa Apartments is no exaggeration. The requisite distance from the Old Town and the elevated hillside location both ensure that the vista will simply astound.
