Guide to Brtonigla

'Looking for traditional Croatian charm, beautiful scenery and plenty of peace and quiet? Welcome to your Istrian idyll.'

There's not much to Brtonigla. But that's the point. Largely untouched by time, this typically Croatian town offers a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the modern world. If you love lively beach life and buzzing nightlife it will probably drive you to distraction. But if your idea of heaven involves walking through acres of glorious countryside, enjoying a home-cooked meal in a friendly taverna and not having the slightest care what time of day it is, this is the destination for you. The Romans called the town 'Ortus Niger' or 'Black Gardens', probably because of its black soil. And it is the same soil which today gives employment to many of the 2000 inhabitants, who make their livings growing superb vegetables and the sweet, dark grapes that create the distinctive local wine. Of course, if you crave the seaside, the Dalmatian Coast is just a short drive away. But you might not be bothered about beaches while you're here. The town's unofficial slogan is 'small place of great discoveries'. It's rather grand, but it rings true. It might be the natural splendour of the surroundings. You might be fascinated by the remains of ancient civilizations. Or you might simply revel in re-discovering the simple pleasures of a bygone age. However this 'small place' grabs you, you won't forget it in a big hurry.
