Guide to Bol

'Its stunning 'Golden Cape' is world famous, but Bol is much more than beach beautiful.'

Of all the beaches in all the world, Bol's V-shaped peninsular ranks among the most unique. Yet this friendly little resort on the island of Brac, sheltered by the soaring peak of Mount Vidova Gora, has much more to offer visitors than its trademark pebbly promontory. There are more sports and leisure facilities than you can shake a stick at, including 25 tennis courts, bowling, volleyball, watersports and diving. Not to mention windsurfing. The conditions here are perfect and the world's surfers have voted with their boards, making this their favourite resort in the region. In the evening, the place to be is the lively harbour promenade, where you're spoilt for choice with bars, cafes and restaurants. Don't forget to try the tastebud tingling local prosciutto and cheese, washed down with a glass of heady Brac wine, 'Bolski Plavac'. There's also a smattering of nightclubs, including the sizeable 'Faces' disco, which accommodates a stamping herd of up to 2000 party animals. As for sightseeing, not to be missed is the nearby Dragon's Cave, decorated with ancient stone carvings, and Bol's 15th century monastery with its well kept botanical garden and interesting museum, housing many artefacts and Baroque paintings. Alternatively, escape and go for a stroll through the wonderful countryside that surrounds the resort, a lush landscape of vineyards, pine woods and olive groves.

Bol, like Brac as a whole, has been occupied by Greeks, Illyrians, Romans and more recently, the Turks, French, Austrians, Germans and Italians, and the architecture of the town and surrounding areas reflects this history. Prehistoric hill forts and burial mounds, Roman remains and interesting churches from different periods can all be found nearby. The island's rugged karst limestone landscape, which includes Mt. Vidova Gora (778 m), the highest peak on the Adriatic islands, is popular with mountain bike enthusiasts, with Bol being a major centre for bike hire and organised excursions. Much of the area around Bol is covered with Aleppo pine forests, interspersed with lush cultivated valleys with vineyards, olives and almond trees.

Beaches

Bol is home to the famous Zlatni Rat (Golden Cape) beach, popular with sunbathers and windsurfers. Accessed via a tree-lined promenade, the little road train or even a boat ride from the village, the white-pebble cape stretches half a kilometre into the clear waters of the Adriatic, and its tip is constantly changing direction under the influence of the currents.

Eating out

Bol is packed with restaurants offering fish, seafood and other local specialities, including vegetarian options, and of course the local Bolski plavac wine. If you want a quiet location, relax by one of the large barbeques in the shade of the pine trees next to the beach.

Nightlife

Bol is a youthful destination with a vibrant nightlife. For something a little quieter, visit an exhibition of work by local artists, see a fashion show or theatrical production, eat out at one of the many restaurants, or just stroll along the beach.

Shopping

Despite being a major tourist destination, Bol can in no way be described as a shoppers paradise, although the old town has some interesting little speciality stores and fresh markets while the hotels, connected to the town centre by a coastal promenade shaded by pine trees, have the usual selection of resort hotel shops.

Local information

Described as a windsurfers' paradise, Bol overlooks the channel between Brac and the island of Hvar, where the wind conditions are ideal for windsurfing. Bol's four windsurfing centres offer windsurfing contests, as well as courses for beginners and advanced windsurfers. Jet skis and many types of boat, including kayaks, are available for hire, and Bol is also a centre for scuba diving, mountain biking and beach volleyball. It is well known for its tennis tournaments, and facilities include a centre with 20 red clay tennis courts surrounded by pine trees.
There is an extensive summer programme of concerts, exhibitions and shows. The area includes galleries and museums with rich collections.
