Valamar Crystal

The family-friendly Valamar Crystal counts a close-to-it-all setting, a relaxing pool set-up, and lots of things to do as highlights.

This place has clinched a seafront spot in a pine forest clearing. You can walk to the ragged shoreline in a few minutes, and the Roman town of Porec is just a bit further on.

The hotel is well geared up for families, with lots of activities and separate pools for children and adults. Décor is cool and contemporary – rooms come with beech furniture and brightly painted feature walls.

Made an excellent hotel choice!

Travelled to Porec with Thomson 16 -23 May with a female friend. Just a 2 hour flight from Manchester. First ever visit to Croatia. Arrived at Hotel Crystal around noon after an hour's transfer from Pula airport, and was checked in straight away and allocated twin room 420 overlooking the pool/gardens - standard size hotel room with hairdryer, free safe, mini bar (fridge), small TV, but no tea/coffee facilities unless requested from reception for a small charge. Chose this hotel based on TA reviews and was very pleased with our choice. Not that pretty from the outside like many hotels here, but spacious, modern interior and extremely clean and comfortable. The staff were all, without exception, friendly and helpful at all times. Wifi was free and very fast in room 420. My bed was superbly comfortable and softer/firmer pillows can be requested as desired. Air con available and fully controllable in the room - quiet and efficient. Sheets/towels changed regularly - towels perhaps a little on the thin side! Superb large seawater pool with aqua jets, whirlpool etc, heated to 26 deg. Pool towels service/provision is available without any deposit - you are given a card on arrival. Plenty of sunbeds in May! Both breakfast and dinner were excellent - loads of choices to suit all tastes, and everything I ate was very tasty, much of it cooked in front of you. The restaurant, as mentioned in other reviews, does have a bit of a "canteen" feel about it (Bhs café sprang to mind!), but there are a lot of people to seat/eat, and the restaurant manager and his staff did an excellent job, always with a greeting and working pleasantly and efficiently. The tap water in Croatia is apparently safe to drink and other British guests I spoke to said they had drunk tap water all week. We stuck to bottled, but this was a problem in that the hotel shop doesn't stock bottled water and the nearest place to buy large bottles was the Billa supermarket in the town. Guests were mainly mature and predominantly German, but this hotel is well equipped to cater for children and families in the summer - lots of kiddy play areas in woodland shade etc. The week we were there the touristic train cost 1 kuna (£1) from Porec to the path leading up to the hotel. The Valamar Crystal, Diamante and Rubin hotels are set near to each other in spacious, green wooded gardens, beautifully cared for, with sun beds randomly placed, a short walk downhill to the sea. Absolutely free of litter anywhere. The weather was perfect for the first 4 days - around 25 deg, sunny and fresh. More cloudy with a couple of showers later in week. Aircon only used a couple of times during the week. No trouble with any insects/bugs! Porec is a beautiful ancient town, very relaxed, quiet in May and generally unspoiled by modern life (my videos of Porec and the hotel are on Youtube). The walk into town is very pretty - 20 mins on the flat - there is an incline back up to the hotel coming back and beware of bikes whizzing past and around you. Turning left from the hotel is even prettier with rocky inlets for bathing, plenty of woodland shade and lovely views back towards Porec. We felt safe whilst walking around, although you are constantly approached by trip sellers, and those wanting you to come into their restaurants (resist politely, and they are fine). Local currency is Kuna which is used everywhere in Porec...currently 1 kuna is worth around 10p. The cost of everything is very reasonable - latte about £1.30 (small cup!). Tea is available but not always understood - ask for cold milk! If buying on the markets, they expect you to haggle with them on the price! Lots of languages spoken...generally basic English is understood, but not as easily as in Spain etc. The local shop/cafe owners told me they are very keen to see British holidaymakers making a return to this area. Day trips are plentiful and can be booked in the hotel. Day trip to Venice costs around £52 on the Catamaran - you'll need passport/Euros. The fast ferry to Venice hadn't yet started to run (June?). The 5 minute ferry across to St Nicholas Island in the bay is well worth the 40 kuna (£4) return fare. The whole island is being developed by Valamar into the beautiful 4 star Isabella Island Resort - everything was brand new with the tradesmen/gardeners still hard at work! Certainly in May this is a lovely place to relax and unwind in a quiet picturesque setting without crowds or excessive heat, and we couldn't have chosen a better hotel than the Crystal - everything was just perfect - thank you!More

Fantastic hotel.

This was our first visit to Croatia and we wouldn't hesitate to go back. The hotel was perfectly located in a small bay only a 15 minute stroll along a coastal path to the town of Porec. We found the rooms to be immaculate with room service everyday. Our room looked through pine trees towards the sea. The rest of the hotel was just as clean and the staff were all friendly and helpful. Buffet breakfast and buffet evening meal where served in the lovely restaurant on the 1st floor. Something for everybody and the food was very good. Lovely pool and extensive grounds. Would recommend to anyone.More

good holiday

The location is perfect, just near the sea, surrounded pine trees. I booked the room with balkony and park view. Unfortunatly they offered me the smallest room that I have ever seen, without balkony and with car parking view on the last floor. It spoiled my mood totally. Next day after my complaint they changed the room. It wasn't big but it was clean, quiet with perfect park view. Sometimes it was too crowded in the restaurant but the food was great!More

Great holiday destination and lovely hotel.

Really enjoyed my first visit to Croatia and to this hotel. The hotel is in an excellent position with a easy 20 minute stroll along the coast to Porec. The hotel has many great facilities, lovely heated pool, plenty of sun loungers, games room and many more. There seems to be lots of activities for children, but we were not travelling with children so we did not use, although we did hire bikes at the sports centre near the coast and had an enjoyable ride along the coastal path. The staff were all friendly and extremely helpful.. The only slight niggle was a couple of the finishing /decoration in the room seemed a bit in need of repair, which you would expect to have been completed as we stayed at the beginning of the season. This did not detract from our enjoyment of our holiday and would definitely visit this resort and this hotel again.More

Wonderful hotel

I travelled on a Leger tour and stayed for a week in what proved to be a very pleasant and immaculate hotel. My first impressions stayed with me throughout the week. The hotel itself and my bedroom and bathroom were spotlessly clean without any fault to find. I was placed in a 6th floor room (where the single bedrooms are) and did not have a balcony as is the norm for single rooms I believe. The bed was comfortable and the nights were quiet and peaceful. The reception staff are very helpful and attentive to the guests requirements. I requested an extra pillow and it came to me in about 15 minutes. All staff in this hotel are friendly and helpful. The gardens are vast and beautiful, encouraging you to relax. It is a pretty 10 minute walk down to the waters edge where the land train can be caught for a short ride into Porec or one can take a delightful walk along the water’s edge into Porec, which takes about 20 minutes. The only niggle i had was with the restaurantrant:. The food is very good and plentiful and buffet style. All food was labeled so if you don’t speak Croatian, you know what the food is. However, vegetarians, be careful because I found some dishes were labeled as ‘rice and vegetables’, but on close up it contained small pieces of ham and this was repeated in other dishes as well. I mentioned this to the restaurant manager, a very helpful gentleman, but I don’t think my meaning was understood. Therefore if you don’t eat meat or fish, keep a watchful eye on the food at dinner and lunch, for while there is always some vegetarian options available, do check for the hidden ham and bacon and meat etc. Breakfast was plentiful with fruit, yoghurt, rolls, croissants, bread and toast, cheese, meats, boiled and scrambled eggs, pancakes and omelette. All in all a great hotel to stay in.More
