The Villas Kolocep scores consistently high marks on TripAdvisor thanks to its unique location and enviable views of the Adriatic.
Locations don’t get much more exclusive than at the Villas Kolocep. The property is set on a small, traffic-free island, a 25-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik. Getting to and from the city is pretty easy – there’s a public boat service 4 times a day. Plus, you can pay a bit extra to be whisked there in your own shuttle boat if you fancy a bit more privacy. The views are worth a mention, too. The whole place is surrounded by a dense countryside of palm, orange and olive trees.

You get the best feel for the hotel’s setting from the swimming area. The pool is right next to Donje Celo Bay and it looks out over the Adriatic Sea. A new outdoor lounge has been built for 2013, which is almost as good looking as the natural views. This area features Balinese beds, mood lighting, and a fire pit.

Accommodation at the hotel is divided between 8 villas. Rooms were refurbished a few years ago, and extras include satellite TVs and minibars. You can pay to have Wi-Fi, too.

The hotel’s restaurant serves 3 meals a day. Breakfast is a buffet of everything from eggs to cereal. At lunchtime you can choose from an à la carte menu, which includes dishes like Dalmatian prosciutto with melon. The à la carte dinner offering, meanwhile, showcases food like grilled calamari and risotto.

Your guide to Kolocep, Croatia Dubrovnik And Islands

“Lapped by piercing-blue seas and carpeted in pinewoods, the idyllic island of Kolocep is a chunk of paradise within touching distance of buzzing, beautiful Dubrovnik.”

Just a short ferry ride from Dubrovnik, the term ‘rat-race’ has probably never reached peace-drenched Kolocep. Basking in brilliant turquoise seas, this idyllic, pine-cushioned island contains an almost indecent share of spectacular scenery and secret beaches – it’s paradise for seclusion-seekers. One of the fourteen Elaphite isles lacing Croatia’s shores, only around a thousand people live on this car-free chunk of paradise. So there are no crowds or noise apart from the chugging of boats and the clinking of wine glasses at the harbourside eateries. Life here circulates around Kolocep’s two waterfront villages, Donje Celo and Gornje Celo. Both curling around stunning, sheltered bays, they’re picture-postcard places, each with pretty bell-towered churches. And at Donje Celo, a curve of pale sand frames the bay, creating an ideal spot for sunbathing, paddling pedalos or trying out windsurfing. Beyond the villages, a natural wonderland awaits. Follow the criss-crossing footpaths and you’ll soon be submerged in dense pinewoods, citrus trees and olive groves scented with lavender, lemon and myrrh. And all along the shores, you’ll discover rocky and sandy coves offering genuine privacy. Unroll your towel and swim in the dazzling waters and you may not see another soul all day. To re-connect with the world, hop on a boat to Dubrovnik, reveling in its fairytale palaces, rock-top bars and restaurant-filled squares. And stay on after dark to savour its lively street cafes and late-night shops. Otherwise, pull up a chair beside the water in Kolocep and linger over plump garlic prawns or grilled lamb, washed down with crisp Dalmatian wine. Then wend your way home, utterly at peace with yourself and the world in true Kolocep style.
