Karmen's House

in Dubrovnik , Croatia Dubrovnik And Islands T rating: 3

  • Historic building
  • Family owned
  • In the heart of Dubrovnik
If you want to live and breathe Dubrovnik, then this charming old Venetian townhouse is a really special place to stay. Tucked away in the Old Town on a narrow, stone-flagged street where locals sit on the steps exchanging news, it’s near the Music School. In fact, you can often the students playing.

This little stone-built house has been in the Karmen family for over 100 years and is filled with interesting artefacts which give it a real home-from-home feel. In traditional Dubrovnik style, it extends upwards rather than horizontally, with the cosy living and dining area, the galley kitchen and the small shower room on the ground floor. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms, each on its own floor. The bedroom at the top is the larger, while the comfy double below is more compact.

Of course, one of the pleasures of staying here is being able to explore the city early in the morning and after the crowds have left which more than makes up for the lack of outside space. And as the area is car-free, a member of the family will meet you at the town walls on your arrival to guide you to the house.

  • The Old Town is a car-free zone, Karmen or a member of her family and a porter will meet you at the town walls and lead you through the warren of streets and steps to her house. Don't worry if you don't memorise the way back, as the fun of staying in this part of town is in losing yourself and making your own fortuitous discoveries.
  • The open stairways are steep, the bedroom on the 1st floor has a low ceiling and isn't suitable for people over 6 feet tall and the top bedroom has an open doorway.

Your guide to Dubrovnik, Croatia Dubrovnik And Islands

"Nowhere else in the world is a medieval city is so perfectly presented. But Dubrovnik isn’t preserved in aspic. It’s vibrant and vital, with pizzerias in its pretty squares, discos down its cobbled streets and watersports on the deep blue sea. Inimitable …"

Encircled by the sturdiest city walls, Dubrovnik climbs up cobbled streets, twists along narrow alleyways and opens onto hidden squares. It’s a labyrinth with a sightseeing treat round every corner. The view from the ramparts over terracotta-topped buildings is almost too perfect to be real. Church domes and bell towers rise towards the sky. And here and there are splashes of green – where a tall tree is throwing dappled shade onto an ancient piazza. But it’s not all about the city scene. Lapping at the city’s south-western edge, the Adriatic forms a sparkling blue backdrop to a picture unchanged through centuries. So much for the wider picture. Now home-in on the detail. This UNESCO World Heritage Site may look much as it did six hundred years ago, but it survives because it’s anything but old-fashioned. Along with the monasteries and palaces, there are markets and pizzerias. Intimate bars and restaurants inhabit old-world buildings. In July and August, Dubrovnik’s Summer Festival fills the stone-paved streets with the music of outdoor concerts. The town’s marina is attracting a growing number of yachties – and sailing is second-to-none with so many offshore islands to explore. This city is a one-off.

Karmen's house is great. It is extremely well equipped including TV and lots of books. We had a great welcome. Marko, one of the family, met us at the Ploce Gate to help us with our luggage and show us the way. He was charming and also came to help... more on this review
