Guide to Golden Sands

"Golden Sands' unpronounceable Bulgarian name is the only thing to challenge you in this friendly, fun, family-orientated resort."

Second only to Sunny Beach in size and popularity, Golden Sands (or 'Zlatni Pyuastsi' to give it its tongue-twisting Bulgarian name) is a lively, cosmopolitan resort clustered around one of the best beaches on the North Coast. Purpose-built, it's not quaint or particularly picturesque, but if you want a holiday resort that knows how to enjoy itself, this is the place for you. With a name like 'Golden Sands', you'd expect a good beach. And you won't be disappointed. A stretch of fine sand runs the length of the resort, gently shelving into calm seas just perfect for children and inexperienced swimmers, particularly as there's an army of lifeguards for added security. There are water sports on offer to break up the sunbathing, while behind the beach is the resort's 'engine room', a long, well kept promenade, lined with shopping kiosks, bars and restaurants. And for a fun alternative to the beach for all the family, there's the Aquapolis water park, just a few minutes away. In the evening Golden Sands is lively, although not over boisterous. There are plenty of places to eat, many offering extremely good value fare such as kebabs and pizza. Plus there are several authentic eateries, where you can fill up on bean soup and meat stew, washed down with a couple of Bulgarian beers or a glass or two of full bodied cabernet sauvignon wine. Close to Golden Sands is one of the Black Sea Coast's most famous sightseeing attractions, Aladzha Monastery, a complex of caves carved out of the rock face. Occupied as far back as the Stone Age, they are decorated with murals painted by the silent order of 'hesychast' monks who once lived there.

You don't need to worry about children being bored in Golden Sands - there are plenty of attractions specifically for them. These include sports centres that offer organised competitions, games, pony riding and inflatable castles. Golden Sands is a resort for families and couples looking for sun and fun with beautiful views. Another of Golden Sand's attractions are the ancient mineral springs found throughout the resort.
