'With a great beach and all sorts of activities on tap, Albena is one of the Black Sea's most popular holiday playgrounds.'
Choose Albena and you won't be short of things to do. Known as the 'sports capital' of the Black Sea, this modern resort offers everything from watersports to ten-pin bowling. With no less than five sailing academies, a scuba school and one of the country's best riding centres, it's easy to see why it's such a hit. There's no town centre to speak of and it's not exactly big on history. But if your objective is to top up your tan and wind down your mind, this is the place for you. Top of Albena's list of assets is its beach, four miles of beautiful white sand much of which is backed by a lengthy pedestrianised prom lined with snack bars, cafes and ice cream stalls. As for evening activities, there are plenty of lively bars, as well as a good selection of eateries. Hottest of the nightspots is the basement club at the Hotel Dobrudja, and there are several other venues that sizzle with dance fever. Venturing further a field? Head for the village of Obrochiste. It's overlooked by a ruined hilltop monastery which houses the tomb of the 14th century Dervish divine, Ak Yazula Baba.
Sports are particularly abundant in Albena. If you like your activity to be water-based, you won't be short of choices - water skiing, yachting, surfing and many others are all easily accessible. If you prefer dry land, there are also plenty of activities - test your skills at tennis, bowling or beach volleyball. For a view from above, try a helicopter ride. Albena will suit you if you like activity and facilities to be close at hand, although of course, the long beach gives you a perfect opportunity to do absolutely nothing but soak up warm weather and spectacular views.

Albena boasts 7km of fine golden sand, a superb range of watersports and, for children, a fun fair, mini-train, mini-golf and trampolines. There is a promenade bordering part of the beach, which hosts snack and ice cream stalls. The sea is clean and the seabed shelves very gradually. There are sunbeds and parasols available for daily hire.
The choice of eating establishments is mainly limited to hotel restaurants although there are a few snack-style eateries, bars and tavernas on the beachfront. The menus tend to be fairly similar, usually serving traditional Bulgarian food. Or for the sweet-toothed have a coffee and choose from one of the varied selections of cakes on the 15th floor cafeteria at the Hotel Dobrvdzha and take in the amazing views of Albena and its coastline.
In the evening, sample the cosy tavernas and small bars. Alternatively, there's the lively Variety-Casino Albena. This large building has a casino on the first floor, and a theatre on the second offering concerts and shows.
Shopping is largely limited to locally produced handicrafts, linen and souvenirs from the stalls and kiosks which line the pedestrianised main street.
You don't have to stray too far from Albena to find areas of cultural or historical interest - just 8km north is the quaint town of Balchik. Founded in the 6th century BC, its cottages and villas appear almost to hang from the steep cliffs. There are stunning botanical gardens here which used to be the park of a small former palace built in the Oriental style. Ancient amphorae and tombstones dot the park.
