3 star at best

Mostly German and Russian guests. Worst Riu hotel I've stayed in. This tired old hotel does not deserve a 4 star rating. The room was clean but in need of updating, while the bathroom had damaged tiles, chipped mirror and damaged toilet seat. There were no tea or coffee making facilities in the room and only 2 English TV channels. Our party were given a room at the side of the hotel overlooking a derelict hotel and wasteland with a row of shops in front. It got so noisy at night with dogs barking and drunks shouting until 5.00am we considered sleeping in reception. If you want a good nights sleep pay more for a pool or sea view. We were refused an upgrade despite willing to pay. Below our balcony a gang had set up stalls using electric extension cables running into the hotel kitchen. We saw this gang sexually assault two women tourists and then punch and kick them leaving one lying bleeding on the road. This is Bulgaria, so do not leave the hotel late at night and turn left as these Riu hotel sponsored thugs can get nasty. Sun beds get grabbed early but we always found a few in the end. The hotel food was awful, we found raw fish and chicken being dished up. The Chinese theme restaurant was ok and the Bulgarian restaurant a bit better both preferable to the main restaurant which we not allowed to eat in before 8.00pm (second sitting). Drinks are ok, a bit watery but fine. The reception staff were not pleasant, on arriving we were not allowed to go to our rooms until we had eaten in the restaurant! Particularly unpleasant was the reception manage Megi, she was very unhelpful and rude, she needs customer service training. The hotel manager strutted around the place like a peacock instead of doing her job inspecting rooms and stopping the staff scams and tasting the awful food. In summary, 3 star hotel, awful food, tired rooms, lawless gangs and noisy. Would not stay here again Tip, Bulgarians rarely give change so have the right money. 2 couples on our plane had jewellery stolen by the Bulgarian bag handlers on arrival so don't put these in your suit cases. The road train conductor will always try and charge 3 levs for a child while the tarrif is only 1 lev for under 12s. Beware the women in Nessebar who try and plant plastic necklaces on you, once around your neck you have to pay or they get nasty.More

CardiffSteveH,

Had an amazing stay!

Such a excellent hotel. More range of food with different restaurants in the hotel. Gym room was great for us! Pools were a good size, however far too cold for us so never went in them unfortunately. The hotel is in a great location with lots to do.More

Good holiday

Leaving riu helios today; I would say we picked one of the best hotels out here compared to other hotels we have seen. The staff are all very happy; bar staff the same too. Quick to serve and happy to help you get very merry with a lot of shots. The hotel is very clean; the food was alright not the best all inclusive but always found something to eat. Room was spacious. Leave a card in the slot all day in your room for aircon to work properly. YOU MUST GO TO THE BULGARIAN RESTAURANT the lamb is amazing. No major complaints only little grips which were: Asian restaurant - we expected sit down service due to having to book but it was buffet and not that great. Unbranded alcohol; we were told it was branded. The hotel is very central not to close to the strip but 5 mins walking. Hotel quiet which is surprising considering the location. Right next to the beach. If you fancy a night out with a bit more of an adult setting we recommend bedroom beach but take plenty of money. Old Nessebar is lovely for a day out and evening we found it had better standards of food. Nothing special when staying local. Mostly pub grub. Khan's tent is a good night out best thing we done here. All in all very good holiday. Wouldn't come again purely because we don't like to visit country's twice. More

Emma D,

Hotel Riu Helios

Hotel was very clean, reception helpful. Air conditioning in the room wasn't very good, it wasn't fixed Properly until day before we left, and only seemed really cold in the room as engineer left the key card in the holder for it to run for the whole day. Was only given one key for the room. Bar staff were brilliant when the one supervisor was on, and one young lady was brilliant interacted well with customers and brought energy to the rest of the team, if they weren't there you did wait longer to be served. Wifi spotty were it was free. Food - was very disappointing compared to other 4* hotels we have been too, same food served lunch & dinner and not very hot, servers don't clear the table very quickly had several plates each on table by time we finished our food. After 3 days we ate out the rest if the time, food in local restaurant was great and pretty cheap.More
