Family group holiday July 2015

We visited the Riu Helios Hotel in Sunny Beach in early July for a week. I was very pleased with our stay - the hotel was one of the nicest I saw in the area of Sunny Beach where we were. It is set in lovely grounds and gives privacy from the promenade just to the rear of the hotel where you literally can cross over in a minute to the lovely beach. It is set to a quieter end of the strip so although you can get to the bars and clubs quite easily - in a few minutes walk along the promenade, it is not right in the thick of things which suited us. We had a sea view room which overlooked the smaller pool and across to the beach and sea. I would definitely recommend going for a sea view room, as it was lovely to be able to go out onto the balcony and see the beach and sea every morning and evening. I would also recommend if you are travelling on a late return flight, to get a late checkout. It is 90 Leva - just over £30 for a late checkout but we kept our room until 8 pm on the last day, which was great as we could enjoy our last day as normal to make the most of all the holiday. A safe is 40 Leva for the week. There are two round pools, one on each side of the hotel and plenty of sunbeds, although these do get reserved in the normal way, but if you head down at around 8.30-9.00 am you can usually reserve a good spot with no problem. The animation team are lovely - there are daily activities including rifle shooting, aerobics, boules, etc, but you are never harassed if you do not want to join in. We did join in with some activities and the team were very friendly and get everyone involved, including different nationalities with ease to make sure everyone had a great time. Restaurants are very good at the hotel - we dined at the main restaurant, the snack restaurant and the Asian Restaurant. The choice of food in all is very good and I think you would struggle to not find something you liked for even the fussiest eaters. There is a good choice of drinks included, including 3 or 4 alcoholic cocktails and 2 non-alcoholic cocktails, local beer, wine and spirits, as well as bottled water whenever you need it from the reception. The service is excellent and staff are always cleaning and clearing tables efficiently. Around the hotel it is very clean and I cannot fault anything. I think the only things to bear in mind about your visit to the resort are that if you intend to use the beach every day, it is 8 Leva for each sun lounger and parasol - they are in sets of 2 loungers and a parasol so it is 24 Leva per set. This could add up if you wanted to spend a few days on the beach so it is something to bear in mind. Also, you will need your own towels for the beach. The hotel do give you a card for each guest for pool towels which you can pick up and return each day, but it is worth taking your own tools even if you only intend on using the pool rather than the beach, as they are useful to mark your territory when reserving your sunbeds in the morning! :-) We did take a boat trip to Nessebar, which is very easy - boat trips run every 20 minutes from a jetty about 10 minutes walk down the beach, to the left out of the Hotel. The boat trip to Nessebar was 10 Leva per person, so about £4 each way which was well worth it. A nice way to see the coastline and more pleasant I think than a bus ride. Nessebar is well worth a visit - it is very pretty. To sum up, I would say that the Riu Helios is a great hotel to stay at in Sunny Beach whether you are visiting Sunny Beach for the nightlife, or just looking for a lovely hotel and beach and great service, together with great weather. Sunny Beach is a massive resort and this is the ideal location if you do not want to be right in the middle of it. I did find it slightly strange that there are lots of big hotels along the promenade and alongside them, loads and loads of market style stalls selling lots of fake designer brands, which can be a bit repetitive and tacky - seemed an odd contrast but overall, the resort is just a fun place. Hope you enjoy if you are planning a visit.More

Fantastic holiday

We travelled to Bulgaria in May & stayed in this wonderful hotel. When you arrive at the airport there are plenty of taxis if you don't want to use the bus transfer & it cost approximately £25. Upon arrival at the hotel at 10.30pm we were checked in very fast & the staff took our luggage to the room whilst we enjoyed a drink in the bar which was open until 12am. You are not provided with food but there are plenty of restaurants surrounding the hotel if you are hungry! The hotel is in a great location & you are close to the beach & main strip! The hotel staff are all very friendly & polite & made our stay pleasurable! We found the exchange rate in resort much better than in the UK, we got 2.69 to the pound. Just be aware not to exchange money in the street as they give you old Levs which are out of circulation! We always used the Crown exchanges which you will find all over Sunny Beach. The local people are very friendly & will try & get you in their bars & restaurants, but if you say no they don't take offence they are just doing their job! My husband had a tattoo on the main strip in a shop called Sunny Ink. It was a fraction of the price you would pay in the UK & was very clean along with friendly professional staff. We loved this hotel & our holiday in Bulgaria so much we have booked to go back in September! More

Sallyb0831,

Friendly staff, clean but bad food

When arriving at the hotel you are given your key card to the room in a little booklet with other cards. We were not told what the cards were until we checked out. The other cards allow you to get a towel from the pool area, we were only given one card so when we checked out and they asked for two, we explained how we were only given one and that we never knew what they were for. They then explained that the cards are used to take towels out and that we have to pay 30leva if we don't have two. We were never given two but that wasn't accepted and the manager threatened to not let us leave the country until we paid. We also had another problem as people went into our room with ease by just going down to the front desk and asking for a room key for whatever room they wanted without question. The food in the standard buffet restaurant is basically fast food, you have some variety for different themed nights but the food is not to a good standard. The Asian restraint is a lot better and so is the Bulgarian. But I still wouldn't say it was amazing, just standard quality. It's a very family orientated hotel, the alcohol isn't great, it's the cheap foreign brands. However, it is a clean hotel, maids were very good and the staff overall very friendly.More

Frank H,

Great relaxing holiday

Just back from 2 lovely weeks at Hotel Helios. Staff couldn't be more pleasant and happy to help with any request - all have good English. We had a lovely good sized room with a huge balcony overlooking the pool/sea (room 2111) - which I didn't pay extra for, guess we were just lucky! Fridge was great to keep bottled water (free at reception) very cold. The maids did a great job every day and never disturbed us early morning. The rooms have fantastic sound insulation and never heard a sound. The maids left my (old supermarket points) card in the slot to keep the aircon and electricity on to charge things all day. The air con was not the coolest but cool enough for a good night's sleep. The beds are comfortable but the pillows are lumpy. Toiletries replenished every day. The animation team were so friendly but not in your face - plenty to do all day if you like activities. Plenty of sun beds and two huge very clean, fresh water pools with safe kid's pools. The restaurant was never messy as some can be with so many guests - the staff clear everything away very efficiently. The food was very good and caters for all tastes. Help yourself to wine and beer (both good). My only small gripe would be the coffee but I find that problem with most hotels. The Asian restaurant, which you can book as part of the All Inclusive as often as you like, is absolutely fantastic - best Asian food I've ever had. The beach has beautiful sand but the sea was thick with green seaweed and jellyfish aren't uncommon, however, the sea was full of people (I'm just a wimp). If you walk about 20 mins to the left the sea becomes clear and really lovely. Sunny Beach itself is just crazy - one big party, (I'm past all that!). Hotel Helios is like an oasis 10 minutes from the madness. Very difficult to find free wifi in Sunny Beach. I didn't pay for wifi in the hotel because I think a 4 star hotel should give this free. Had a great holiday and loved the hotel.More

Would go back tomorrow!

I visited the RIU Helios in the second week of July with one of my friends for 7 nights on a girls holiday! The hotel itself is in a fantastic location, you only have to walk 10 metres from the pool area to the gate at the back of the hotel and you are literally on the beach. Take a right at the hotel entrance and walk 5 minutes and you are on the strip. TIP: If you are walking along the strip and are stopped by promoters for clubs etc. we found that by telling them we had plans for the evening, they tend to harass you less. (Be warned, unless you are in an older age bracket they will stop you and they will try to get you in their clubs) - This didn't bother us too much as we were in Sunny Beach to party and they are only doing their job. The hotel has several shops just over the road and a few more family friendly pubs just a short walk away. Route 66 is worth visiting if you're into your live music and Billy's has a friendly atmosphere and cheap sex on the beach cocktails! The choice of drinks in the hotel was good. Although, we found the cocktails a bit too strong to stomach. This could be due to the fact that they aren't made fresh but instead are poured from pre-made bottles. Vodka mixed with lemonade and lime was our choice of drink in the hotel and trust me they aren't stingy on the vodka haha. The soft drinks during the day were never watered down and you can help yourself to soft drinks and lager at the snack bar round the pool. Neither of us drink lager so I can't comment on what that tasted like. Bottled water is free you just have to ask for it at reception! We stayed in room 3179 and this overlooked the front of the hotel. The room was spotlessly clean and we cannot fault the maids for their efforts, our bed sheets were fresh everyday and our towels were replaced everyday. We found the rooms spacious and the beds comfortable and you also get a fridge! We felt safe at all times in the hotel, especially at night as the security guards on the door are VERY vigilant. If you're going on a lads holiday and are expecting to take girls back to your hotel for some fun..this isn't the hotel for you. Nobody gets in unless they have a wristband on. The wifi in the hotel was very slow but for me personally the internet wasn't an issue, I'm on holiday, I'm not there for the wifi! Now, I was quite sceptical about the food having read previous reviews, however I was pleasantly surprised. I have stayed in several RIU hotels in the past and I would say this is one of the weaker hotels in terms of food, but not by any means was the food bad. I'm not an adventurous eater and didn't try any of the fish or soup etc. which they had on offer, I mainly stuck to pizza and pasta; both of which tasted delicious. I did find the food repetitive but I expect that from all inclusive hotels, so despite the repetitiveness we never went hungry and there was always something to choose from that was hot and tasty. The Asian restaurant is supposed to be lovely although we never had chance to visit. We paid £540 each and for what we got I would go back again for this price. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and are a credit to the hotel. The entertainment team work so hard each day to get everybody involved and the water polo on an afternoon is good fun. We did struggle to get a sunbed but that was our own fault for not getting to the pool until 11am each day. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Helios and if another good deal came up I would not hesitate to go back! :)More
