This smart-looking hotel scores a double coup – it sits on the beach and has a great pool scene, too.
With whitewashed walls, arched balconies and a terracotta roof, this place is classically good-looking. What’s more, it stretches out alongside a sandy beach, so it’s ideal in terms of location.

Sandwiched between the hotel and the beach, you’ll find the pool. It’s shaped like a number eight, and is fringed by a wide sun deck. Overlooking the scene, there’s a bar which does a good range of lunchtime snacks – think hotdogs, pasta and pizza.

For more in the way of food, the main hub is an international buffet with on-the-spot cooking stations. There’s also a restaurant serving a Bulgarian-themed menu - a top choice for your main is the lamb. And for after-dinner drinks, you’ve got a choice of the lobby or lounge bar – both have chairs spilling out on to terraces looking out at sea.

In terms of the accommodation itself, rooms are bright and smart-looking. Plush carpets and chunky mahogany furniture stand out against cream walls. In-room comforts come courtesy of air-conditioning, satellite TVs, and mini-fridges, while glass doors open on to large balconies. If you opt for an upgrade, you’ll get a sea view, too.

As for where you’ll find it, the hotel is less than a five-minute walk from the pretty town of Obzor.

Your guide to Obzor Beach, Bourgas Region

"Fun and friendly with an authentic Bulgarian atmosphere, Obzor is the perfect place to kick back and catch some rays."

Appropriately called Heliopolis, or ‘City of the Sun’, by the ancient Greeks, Obzor is a friendly and laid back little holiday resort, even at the height of the season. The Romans also liked the place, calling it Navlohos, and turning it into a key fortified trading settlement on the route between Constantinople and the Danube. They also built the Temple of Jupiter, some of the columns of which can still be seen in the park next to the town’s main square. However, unless you’re an archaeologist a trip to Obzor isn’t really about delving into the town’s history. It’s about relaxation in the time-honoured tradition of the sun, sea and sand holiday. The town’s superb beach, set against the stunning backdrop of the Stara Planina mountains, is the centre of attraction. And the most popular pastime for visitors is stretching out on a sunbed for some serious suntime, punctuated with the odd dip in the ocean. As for evening entertainment, Obzor is no Las Vegas, but the mostly family-run eateries serve up an attractive assortment of fare, both Bulgarian and cosmopolitan, plus there are several music bars where you can dance off your dinner. For a break from the beach life, hire a car and explore the coast road, which winds through some charming little hilltop villages and offers spectacular views of the coastline. You can also drive through rolling vineyards to the picturesque little coastal town of Byala, where you can sit in one of the harbour side fish restaurants and sample the catch of the day, complemented by a glass or two of the local Dimyat wine.
