This smart-looking hotel scores a double coup – it sits on the beach and has a great pool scene, too.
The Hotel Riu Helios Bay stretches out alongside a sandy beach, so it’s ideal in terms of location. What’s more, it’s less than a 5-minute walk from the pretty town of Obzor.
With whitewashed walls, arched balconies and a terracotta roof, this place is classically good-looking. And in terms of accommodation, plush carpets and mahogany furniture stand out against cream walls. It's had a full refurb for May 2017, with a refresh to all rooms, a bigger main restaurant and lobby area, and a brand new karaoke bar.

Just returned from this hotel, Had a relaxing week at the Helios bay hotel, Pros Great friendly staff, very clean always, hotel just refurbished, walk in shower ' spacious bedrooms, great part sea view , could see all the bay, on the beach, free towels for the sun beds , all sun beds have a umbrella and table, so you can place your drinks nearby, I have read most reviews, you can't please everyone all of the time. If you want good value for money this is the place to go. True the food is a little repetitive. But if you eat meals without absolutely putting everything on your plate, you can have a different meal every day, Some people go back 4,5,6 times, fill their plate this is not normal, the variety is very good. Cons. Pool closes at 6pm, some people like to stay a little longer , Entertainment starts at 9.30 and usually finishes around 10.00. Some acts are outstanding, some are not, One the other hand bar staff are exceptional, always friendly, you will be served within 30 seconds, nothing too much for them and always a friendly smile, can't fault them at all, Same with reception staff, I enjoyed the Asian restaurant, Pool and jacuzzi very clean, short walk into the town square, did not go at night but imagine it would be full of atmosphere, I would certainly go back to this hotel, no questions asked.More
Nice hotel not alot for kids
I write this review as we are still here. The hotel is lovely with nice comfortable rooms that have been refurbished. The rooms are clean and are very well maintained. The entertainment throughout the day is your typical yoga, shooting etc. However in the evening there isn't much entertainment for children in fact this hotel caters more for the elderly. I think it's worth mentioning this hotel is 30 minutes outside of sunny beach and is in a quiet rural residential area with not a lot going on. In fact quite boring. The food is nice however it's the same food and the menu doesn't change. I wouldn't recommend trying the Asian restaurant it was awful they have tried to mix Chinese with Japanese cuisine and for me there is either one or the other. Also worth mentioning they do not cater for children in the restaurant! There are things for children to do such as a play area and a kids swimming pool but not much else. The restaurant staff are not very good when it comes to clearing the tables I found myself clearing dishes because they would often walk past our table and clear someone else's. I think it's also worth mentioning this is a very German resort and there are two languages German or Bulgarian I find the staff are not very accommodating to English people but this is my personal opinion. The spa was lovely and we enjoyed a 50 minute full body massage for 50 lev. If you are leaving late and you want to extend your room check out there are additional fees which they charge on an hourly basis and whilst you ask for a later checkout it's worth mentioning it isn't guaranteed we have asked for one and we have to confirm the day before we fly home. We have a two year old son and don't want to be left hanging around for 9 hours before we fly home. This hotel is nice but needs some major improvement we came as a party of 5 adults and 1 infant (2 year old) whilst the holiday is relaxing there isn't a great deal for children despite the fact the hotel boasts child friendly resort. I would be willing to try the hotel in sunny beach which is also hotel riu Helios. It's worth mentioning this hotel is highly recommended by Thomson honestly speaking had I have known what I have known before booking I probably wouldn't have booked this hotel. More
We had a lovely stay here at Helios bay! The rooms were great, spacious and clean, good shower facilities cannot fault. Pool area again is spotless people always going round cleaning it, the pool itself is very clean and really cold lol! The bar is very close by and the staff are fab!! The beach is outside of the pool area again is lovely. The food is a bit samey but always something to eat and to a really good quality never struggled to eat, always very fresh too! The only problem we had is that the location isn't in a great area so there's not much to do very secluded as the weather wasn't particularly great we did struggle! It's a really nice location just isn't much around it was our first time in Bulgaria we went without knowing much about it if you don't mind being tied to the hotel then it's fine, entertainment in the evening doesn't start till 9:30pm to be fair wasn't great either it's ok if you're going with children but it's alright! As for excursions again isn't much on offer but there's enough there! But we found the people really nice and sweet. Overall a good stay but wouldn't go back.More
Early Summer Break
Just retuned from this hotel last week and although the weather was not the best we still had a good time. The room was nice and clean with clean towels every day. My husband is a fussy eater and he always found something tasty to eat, we even dined twice in the Asian restaurant, the food was really good. The bar staff were fantastic, it got that I did not need to tell them what I wanted they always remembered. On the downside the sunbeds are to close together, you stand the risk if you lie with your arms out of hitting the person in the next bed. If you want a nice quite holiday with not a lot going on outside the hotel this is the one for you. Would we go back? YES as all the staff were so pleasant and nothing was to much trouble for them.More
Overall Good Vacation
Hotel Rooms are great - big - nice bathroom, beds really comfortable. Almost all have great sea view, some have sea view to the side of the hotel with partial sea view. Depends on how lucky you are. Wifi internet is free in the lobby and in restaurant, but if you came at this hotel for sea not internet, right ? Restaurant are great, big variety of foods at every meal, champagne for breakfast, chocolate fountains and more, you will gain wight for sure. Pool area is great, jacuzzi, inside pool, and kids pool. There are many old people which come to this hotel, most of them have 60-70 years old. There are too few with kids. The kids club is a mess, the room smells bad, poor entertainment, because of the humidity of the walls are some stains. It is not a good option to let your child there, for sure they will be bored. Animation team for kids does not exists. Only in the evening for 30 minutes there is mini disco, same songs every day and is boring. There are shows organized by animation team each evenings, relatively short time and some of them boring. Not much of a great animation team at RIU. The MOST UNPLEASANT thing was the beach. We found out when got there that this year the beach is not under hotel's management. So if you want to stay there you have to pay 6 Leva for sunbed and 6 Leva for umbrella. It is a shame for RIU. Also the beach sand was very dirty, with trash leftovers. One day it was a storm on the sea and it came at shore petrol rubber. Everyone was dirty on their feet, some had to buy alcohol to get those stains cleaned from the skin. It was a mess. Bad management idea for RIU's to not take care of the beach. We came here for the beach, not for the pool area. Bartenders guys are great, they make their best to make people feel good. Overall it was a good vacation. Recommend this hotel only if the beach is managed by RIU. Otherwise no.More
