Holidays to Punta de Mita put miles of talcum powder-like sand on your doorstep. Plus, it’s got waves to rival Hawaii.
The natives believe Punta de Mita is a place for spiritual renewal, and it’s easy to see why. Sitting on the uppermost tip of Banderas Bay, it’s surrounded by the sky-blue Pacific on three sides. The traditional beachfront fishing village lies next to a cluster of swanky resorts. It’s a real playground for the rich and famous – think Beyoncé, Britney and the Kardashians.
It’s all about the beach here – even the food centres around it. Anclote Beach is where you’ll find restaurants serving up freshly-caught seafood and oversized margaritas. This Caribbean-like stretch is framed by the Sierra Madre Mountains. Some of the secluded sandy swathes can only be accessed by boat, like the ‘hidden beach’ on the UNESCO-protected Marieta Islands.
Water lover’s paradise
Punta de Mita, or Mexican Malibu as it’s known, lays claim to some of the world’s best first-time surfing spots. The waves break right in front of the shore at Anclote Beach, so it’s the perfect place for getting in some practice. There’s also kayaking, windsurfing, jet skiing and deep-sea fishing to try. And don’t miss a snorkelling or diving trip, where you’ll spot tropical fish, sea turtles, dolphins and whales.
