This hotel has gone for a Mediterranean look. All white stucco, marble and tiles, it’s got lots of architectural and design flourishes that wouldn’t look out of place in Andalucia.

Rooms are a fusion of Mexican, Spanish and Moorish styles. Think heavy wooden bedsteads, bold artworks and earthenware urns teamed with a full line-up of 5-star accoutrements. In contrast, the Chez Isabelle restaurant is styled like a French chateau. Wood beams, regal dining chairs and gleaming wood floors work together to create a fitting setting for its gourmet French menus.

The Excellence has a reputation for thoughtful service, too. One of the good things about staying here is you don’t need to reserve its a la carte restaurants – you’ll get a table without booking in advance. So you’re free to choose between seafood, Asian, Italian, Mexican, French and a steakhouse however the mood strikes you on the day.

The same emphasis on choice extends to the facilities. However you want to relax, there’s pretty much something to fit. The lagoon pool comes with five other smaller ones, so there’s always a good sunbathing spot to be had. Or head for the spa for a dose of pampering. Housed in a wedding-cake annexe, it’s deluxe to say the least, with 16 different water treatments, steam baths and Mayan-inspired body scrubs.

All this said, the hotel’s real raison d’etre is the beach. This gorgeous slice of shoreline is the Mayan Riviera all over - creamy white sands, aquamarine seas and thatched parasols.
