Whether you want a magazine brought to your sunlounger or your fish cooked to order, nothing’s too much trouble at the El Dorado Maroma.

The adults-only El Dorado Maroma is every inch the luxury hotel. For starters, it’s set on the sweeping white sands of Maroma Beach, which was rated one of the top 10 beaches in the world by the Travel Channel.

Then you’ve got the accommodation. Bedrooms are bright and full of finishing touches like plump cushions. And, for something really special, you can upgrade to a room with a Jacuzzi™, or better still, a swim-up room. Facilities at the hotel go the extra mile. There are 2 swimming pools, one of which winds its way around the hotel like a lazy river. Both pools are serviced by butlers, who bring fresh towels, magazines and nibbles to your lounger. The hotel has a spa, too, where treatments include herbal scrubs and tequila body treatments.

The hotel’s dining set-up is Gourmet Inclusive®, which means you can look forward to gourmet cuisine from top international chefs. The Papitos Beach Club, for example, serves themed lunches throughout the week. These range from a taco bar to a fish market, where you can select your own fish and have it grilled just the way you like it.

Grab that sombrero. If you want your beach with a frisson of authentic Mexico on the side, this is a winner. This 30-kilometre slice of Yucatan shoreline from Playa del Carmen to Punta Allen offers up a less hedonistic kind of holiday than Cancun. OK, the hotels are still showpiece, plush and mostly all-inclusive - so you’ll have all the comforts you can think of. But there are two differences. First, there’s more emphasis on the simple joys of the beach than in bigger, brasher Cancun and its environs. And because the sands here are backed by low-lying jungle you’ll get the tropical touch of swaying coconut palms and reminders of Mexican’s ancient history closer by too. Here, you’ll find resorts like stylish Playa del Carmen and quiet havens like Puerto Aventuras.
