Riu Playacar

in Playacar , Mexico - Caribbean Coast T rating: 4

  • On the beachfront in Playacar
  • Colourful and attractive gardens
  • Lots of activities
“Sitting on a white sandy beach, Riu Playacar walks the line between lively and laid-back.”
Tropical, friendly and relaxed, the Riu Playacar is a book you definitely can judge by its cover. With its whitewashed walls, terracotta-tiled roof and jungle setting, it’s got classic Caribbean good looks. Inside, the lobby is an appealing mix of Mexican and colonial design. Think Aztec-style wood carvings, paintwork in tropical brights and old-world touches like ceiling fans, chandeliers and scroll-legged tables.

As for the rooms, they’re clustered into dinky blocks, scattered through the gardens and no taller than a well-established palm tree – each one’s just three storeys high. Plus they’re painted in an array of candy colours and trimmed with hacienda-esque verandas. The bedrooms themselves are generously sized, decked out with solid wood furnishings, ceiling fans and air-conditioning. And they come with nice-to-have extras like satellite TV, complimentary toiletries and Riu’s signature liquor dispenser.

It’s the same high standard throughout the rest of the hotel, too. The smart restaurants include an international buffet, an Asian-themed eatery that’s dressed in red, black and white, and an American grillhouse. And there are more than enough bars to go around, with La Cumbia lounge bar doing a mean line in cocktails. But the choice doesn’t end there. This place is part of the Riu Playacar Resort complex so you can have your after-dinner drink at any of the bars in Riu Yucatan and ClubHotel Riu Tequila.

In terms of things to do, tennis courts, watersports, pool tables and a gym sort the activities list out. Plus the entertainment team organise endless games, quizzes and competitions – as well as their nightly cabaret show. When you really want to unwind though, the pool pulls out all the stops. All palm trees, exotic plants and tinkling fountains, it’s like something from a paradise island - just the ticket for long lazy days in the sun.

Your guide to Playacar, Mexico - Caribbean Coast

“Playacar’s air of exclusivity and gorgeous beaches make it a stylish retreat for sun-seekers.”

Sumptuous beaches, sumptuous hotels, sumptuous seas… Playacar is perfect if you’re longing for a little extra cosseting on the Yucatan Peninsula. A sophisticated resort south of Cancun and near Playa Del Carmen, it’s quieter and more exclusive than both its neighbours, offering a seductive cocktail of top-notch, all-inclusive hotel complexes and gated residential developments in a peaceful, rather than a partying, atmosphere. Even the beaches are top-drawer. Made of downy soft white sands skirted by nodding palms, they’re some of the Caribbean’s best. In addition, the transparent, warm waters will send shivers of anticipation through snorkellers and divers. Don that snorkel and swoop amongst vividly coloured fish just offshore. Board a ferry to nearby Cozumel island for some soul-stirring diving. Or get your kicks with a bout of water-skiing, windsurfing or kayaking. Prefer dry land? The championship 18-hole course near Playacar is pure gold for keen golfers. When you’re in shopping mode, a mosey around Playacar’s retail mall guarantees a good haul of souvenirs. Or hotfoot it to neighbouring Playa Del Carmen, where a wider choice of handicraft stores and duty-free outlets will easily while away a morning. And when you feel like roving further, strike out into the Yucatan interior to visit the age-old Mayan ruins at Tulum cocooned in the lush tropical jungle. Don’t expect Playacar to transform into a wild party spot by night. Do as most do and head into the centre to dig into a dizzying array of cuisine, from Asian and US to Mexican and gourmet European. Feel like staying in? Join in the fun at your hotel’s nightclub, preceded by some icy cold margaritas on the beach in the company of new friends.
