An introduction to Riu Lupita

Tucked into a tangle of Yucatan jungle, the Riu Lupita is separated from the rest of the Riu Playacar Resort by a golf course which gives it a real away-from-it-all feel that can’t be beaten.

And because it’s a little bit smaller than your average Mexican mega-hotel, you get the kind of personal service than makes you feel really special, too. From the manager to housekeeping, the staff here work hard to make sure you have a fabulous holiday. Seek out the gardener and he’ll be only to happy to give you a fresh-from-the-tree coconut – and if you take it to the bar you can be sipping coconut milk with a splash of rum.

Service aside though, this hotel has plenty to offer. Two gorgeous pools with partially submerged sunbeds tempt you away from the terrace. Hammocks freckle the tropical gardens enticing you to put your feet up. And the food is, quite simply, divine.

Inside they’ve kept things simple. The lobby is a titanic stretch of marble topped with a vaulted, thatched roof and dressed in tropical brights. The bedrooms are spacious, and come with nice touches like a liquor dispenser, complimentary toiletries and air-conditioning. And the main restaurant is thatch-roofed and open to the air, giving it a real outdoors-indoors feel.

All this and you’re only three-and-a-half kilometres from the white sands and crystal clear seas of Mexico’s Caribbean coastline, which seems like no distance at all when you take Riu’s complimentary shuttle service. It sounds like paradise – and it is.

We stayed at the Riu Lupita over the easter break and had a fantastic time. There are a few things they could improve on though, the main one being giving you help with your luggage to your room on arrival. We arrived around midnight after a long flight... more on this review
