'Put simply, Whitehouse is pure Caribbean. It's gorgeous, it's quiet, and it's almost completely untouched by tourism.'
Hugging Jamaica's southeast coast, the small town of Whitehouse is something of a hidden treasure. While other resorts on the island have swelled with holidaymakers over the last decade or so, this place has managed to slip under the tourist radar. In fact, the first hotel here only opened two years ago, so what you get is the real Caribbean deal. Beach-wise, think turquoise waters lapping footprint-free sands, miles of untouched rainforest and some of the most incredible sunsets on the island. But Whitehouse is more than just a pretty face. It's actually the biggest fishing village in Jamaica and most of the locals are involved with the treasures of the deep in one way or another. You've got family-run restaurants serving up the catch-of-the-day. Boats going out to sea as they have done for hundreds of years. And fishermen selling their hauls at the daily markets. Fishing aside, this place has plenty to offer. There is a handful of shops and bars but, typically for the Caribbean, the to-do list centres around the great outdoors. There's everything from hiking and horse riding to scuba diving and golfing. But it's the bird watching that really draws in visitors from far and wide – the rare white cranes and green herons head here for the winter. Most hotels offer bird-watching trips, but nearby Fort Hill bird sanctuary is your best bet for getting a close-up look at the feathered fowl. And if you fancy upping the tempo a bit, the busy shopping and clubbing havens of Port Antonio and Montego Bay can be reached in less than an hour.
