Guide to Runaway Bay

'Set on Jamaica's north coast, Runaway Bay enjoys the scenic beauty of the big resorts but revels in a far more low key style.'

This sleepy little town is a great choice for those wanting a quiet taste of local life. Time here is so laidback, you'll be hard-pushed to remember the haste and speed of home. But whatever else is on offer at this slice of paradise , it's the sand that offers the biggest treat. The beaches are inviting and far less crowded than in the tourist hotspots, and you'll find the selection of water sports is limited to the quieter non-motorised varieties. Scuba diving and snorkelling are particular good options thanks to the added interest of a nearby wreck. Other activities to enjoy include a round or two of golf, or horse-riding trails tailored to take in the most scenic views. You can even take a daytrip. One such nearby excursion, that comes highly recommended, is a drive out to the Green Grotto Caves. These caves date back some half a million years, during which time they have developed a fascinating array of stalagmites and stalactites. Once there enjoy a boat trip through the various chambers where you'll come across an incredible underground lake. Staying in Runaway Bay, you're also near the little village of Nine Miles where music legend Bob Marley was born. As you can imagine the place certainly makes the most of its link with Jamaica's legendary musician, but with his music so engrained in the island's culture the experience is well worth it.

Beaches

The good beaches are what bring people to Runaway Bay, as there is very little else in the resort. You'll find a mixture of white and golden sand beaches, as well as rockier shorelines along this part of the coast. The non-motorised watersports are good from these beaches, such as windsurfing, snorkelling and scuba diving, particularly as there is an offshore wreck to explore.

Eating out

In such a small and simple resort, the dining is very much hotel-based, though they generally open their restaurants to non residents as well, meaning you'll have a selection to choose from. As well as the local spicy dishes and seafood, the cuisine generally has international influences too.

Nightlife

The nightlife in Runaway Bay is almost entirely hotel based, and takes the form of shows, cabaret and discos.

Shopping

A short walk into town and you'll find a few shops, but don't expect too much to be geared to tourists - the atmosphere is emphatically local. For your souvenirs and basic needs, the larger hotels have small shops within their complexes. For a more serious shopping trip, Ocho Rios is only a thirty minute drive away.

Local information

For an impressive day out, visit the nearby Green Grotto Caves. Dark, mysterious and quiet, these large caves have a magical, calming aura. A boat trip through them will finish in a lake, 100 feet underground.
