Holidays in Lucea

An introduction to Lucea

Hugging Jamaica’s northwest coast, the miniature town of Lucea is one of the island’s best-kept secrets. There are only a few hotels here – tourists tend to flock to neighbouring Negril and Montego Bay instead. But that’s not to say the place has gone completely unnoticed. Movie directors realised its potential years ago, with big-name films like ‘Cool Runnings’ and ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’ being shot here. And holidaymakers are beginning to cotton on to the town’s charms. There’s not much to do, but that’s where the appeal lies. Typically for Jamaica, day-to-day life revolves around the classic combination of sun, sea and sand. And when you see the coast you’ll understand why. A sweeping white stretch with turquoise waters and swaying hammocks, it’s textbook Caribbean. The beaches are usually pretty deserted, too, so you’ll get the complete castaway experience. Head inland and things are just as laid-back. Timber houses line the roads, while a handful of shops, restaurants and bars offer up a taste of local life. Things burst into life on Saturdays though, when colourful market stalls, selling everything from fruit to jewellery, spill out onto the streets. The town has one last surprise up its sleeve, too – the 18th-century Fort Charlotte. It was built to protect the coast from attacks, and is still in pretty good shape today. Take a wander around and you’ll see the original artillery store and the old cannons. If you fancy venturing further afield, meanwhile, the bright lights of Montego Bay are about a 20-minute drive away.
