Holidays to the Caribbean
Think of the Caribbean and you’ll likely picture white-sand beaches, tall palm trees and turquoise seas. And you’d be right – this cluster of islands does some of the best beach breaks in the business. It’s not all about sand and sea here, though. You’ll also find tropical landscapes, plenty of culture and an infectious party spirit.
15 miles off the coast of Venezuela is Aruba, home to some of the longest, whitest beaches going. It’s part of the Netherlands, so there’s a bit of a Dutch feel, particularly in the colourful capital, Oranjestad.
Barbados is much more than just rum and Rihanna. Head to this laid-back island and you’ll find beachfront cricket pitches, UNESCO-listed sights, and one of the best party streets in the Caribbean – St Lawrence Gap.
Holidays to the Dominican Republic, meanwhile, give you standout scenery on a platter. Skirting its edges are long, sandy beaches, while inland you’ll find everything from forests and mountains to mangrove lagoons. The island’s also home to some pretty Spanish colonial towns.
Taking it easy is a way of life in Jamaica. Days here tend to involve swimming off white-sand beaches and lunching on spicy jerk chicken, while evenings are all about reggae bars and rum cocktails. If you fancy something a bit different, there are 18th-century plantation houses and grand old mansions to visit.
