Guide to Sosua

To the east of Puerto Plata, the village of Sosua has golden, inviting beaches, set on a stunning half moon bay. This small resort is ideal for the young and energetic. There are several bars and a good choice of restaurants, as well as the odd disco and live music venues. Home to one of the largest coral reefs in the Dominican Republic, Sosua is a great place to try snorkelling or scuba-diving. You may even be lucky enough to meet a shy West Indian manatee, also known as a sea cow. El Batey - just east of the main beach - has several streets leading down to the shore with numerous market stalls and small shops lining their edges. Local paintings and handicrafts make good value, homemade souvenirs and are a great way to take the colour of the Dominican Republic home with you.
