The Grand Paradise couldn't have been called anything else. It really is in paradise. About 25 minutes from Samana, this tranquil resort sits on the edge of a beautiful beach. Plus the gin-clear seas here are protected by a coral reef. The hotel also lies at the heart of a coconut grove that's well off the tourist trail. So when you're down on the beach there's not another hotel in sight. It's just mountain and sea views that are to die for.
The Grand Paradise's grounds are as lovely as its setting. Hidden among crowds of palm trees, the landscaped gardens are filled with soft lawns and flower beds. And taking pride of place are three lagoon-style swimming pools. Sunk into roomy terraces accessorised with sun loungers and parasols, they instantly put you in holiday mode. The thatched El Buren bar is also on standby for snacks and drinks.
But it's not all swimming and sunbathing at the Grand Paradise. The list of activities is never-ending. Sports on offer include archery, minigolf and tennis. You can hire bicycles and explore the surrounding countryside. And down on the beach windsurfing, kayaking and sailing are all on the menu. Younger guests are well catered for too, with a kids' club and children's pool.
Inside, the Grand Paradise is a laid-back oasis. Typically Caribbean in style, it's all wood-vaulted ceilings and cool tiled floors. Three elegant restaurants vie for your attention. There's the Asseradero Buffet where Dominican and European dishes are the mainstay. For freshly-caught seafood try the a la carte Sea Scape restaurant. Or go a la carte Italian-style at the Michelangelo. Five bars are also dotted about including the relaxed beach bar and the Areito Amphitheatre where the evening shows burst into life.
When you're all done for the day, retreating to your bedroom is something you can look forward to. Superior rooms come with two double beds and the Bungalows have a lounge, mezzanine bedroom, a walk-in wardrobe and a kitchenette. Whichever one you go for, they're all tastefully decorated and come with cable TV, air-conditioning and a private balcony or terrace with garden, pool or ocean views. A relaxing retreat with all the holiday trimmings - you can have it all at the Grand Paradise.
