A cool oasis with fresh white walls and lots of space, ClubHotel Riu Bachata is one good-looking Dominican. The lobby is a prime example. All garden-frescoed ceilings and palm leaf chandeliers, it’s got a real Eden-like feel to it – you half expect to bump into Adam and Eve.
In terms of location, this place sits on Maimon Bay, just footsteps from the shore. What’s more, it has a slice of sandy beach for you to unwind on. The sleepy little town of Bahia Maimon offers up a quiet taste of local life. Nestled into thick palm groves on the Dominican Republic’s northern coast, it’s pure relaxation territory. Predictably, the number one attraction here is the beach. All pale sands, cobalt waters and rugged cliffs, it’s textbook Caribbean. In fact, it was even voted as one of the ten best beaches in the world by Conde Nast Traveller. Days here revolve around the local philosophy of taking it easy – take your pick between snoozing on a sunlounger, sipping cocktails at one of the small bars or tackling the waves with a surf board. But Bahia Maimon isn’t just a one trick pony. Just around the corner from the beach is lagoon country. Dudu and Blue Lagoon are favourites with the snorkelling and scuba diving crowds thanks to their fantastically clear waters and hidden caves. Away from the waters, though, Bahia Maimon remains comfortably quiet. There are a handful of local shops, restaurants and bars dotted around, but most of the entertainment here revolves around the hotel scene. The town plays host to some glitzy all-inclusive complexes which, come nightfall, provide a flurry of West End-style shows, sequin-studded cabarets and lively discos. If you fancy getting to know the local area a bit more, though, there are plenty of gems within day-tripping distance. The Cordillera Mountains, for example, offer some great hiking complete with breathtaking views, and at least one of the tobacco and folklore museums in nearby Santiago deserves a visit – if you can drag yourself away from the beach, that is.
